Great article. Thanks a lot for this. The momentum is just getting crazier each week.

Paramount and Universal probably have their press releases drawn up and are awaiting Toshiba to go public.

Good for Sony not repeating the sins of its past.

And at the end, a prediction of $150 Funai Blu-Ray players before year-end.

But sony so far has sold like 60% of the stand alone BD players, right? I think a lot of people consider Blu-ray a Sony tech and therefore buy their players from Sony, or they get the PS3

Putting Blu-Ray into the PS3 was genius by Sony. In my opinion it went a long way into ending this format war sooner.

At this point in time, Sony has 33% of the HDM player sales market (not including PS3), just ahead of Toshiba with 30% (how the mighty have fallen lol).
I agree with the article, the biggest competition of Sony will now be Panasonic for the lead over the Blu Ray market, specially with the BD50 arriving, and BD30s probably becoming entry level priced ($299 BD30s anyone?).
Hopefully Sony will soon release its Saphire line to compete.
I don't think Funai really competes in the same niche, but driving prices down overall and offering entry level access for lower revenues is always good

In any case, well done, Sony (for both the PS3, the Blue-Laser Tech, and a predominant role in the BDA and Blu-Ray's success)

HAHA, thats awesome. My dad was a huge Beta supporter back in the 80s, and we still have a beta machine and a few tapes as well.

my parents spent roughly $800 on their beta player!

Glade to see BD players are significantly lower now.

Analysts said, however, it is too early for Nishitani, who majored in physical electronics at Tokyo Institute of Technology, to pop a champagne cork as the company faces formidable rivals and low-cost competitors within its own Blu-ray group.
But but but, now that Blu-ray won the prices will only go up....says HD DVD fans.

Looks like we have a $150 Funai by the end of the year for those looking for a cheap BD drive.

This is such an irony, Sony were beat by Panasonic and JVC in the beta vs VHS war. They sure learn from the mistake by side with Panasonic and other leading CE company to ensure the victory. I honesly think Toshiba made the same mistake just as SONY did before. U can not go against SONY and Panasonic and many others combine. Ur definly fighting a overwhalming war. U cant win in the long run. History prove it during WWII.
