As you can see, there are quite a few movies in the incorrect aspect ratio on Vudu. I'm hoping that by posting this here, I can get the help of some Blu-ray.com members to add to this list and get these problems known to Vudu. I made the original thread in February and the problems still exist.

I think many of the ones that are not OAR are versions that were originally created to be aired by TV channels. Several films get either cropped or are presented with a more open matte to fill a 16:9 screen for TV broadcast. It's the new fullscreen vs. widescreen.

The Lego Movie 2D should be OAR, the 3D version is 1.78:1 for some unknown reason. At least from the preview options I've used.

Amelie across all UV providers I checked is 1.78:1

Penelope is 1.78:1 on Vudu, its OAR 2.35:1 on the others.

Almost all of the movies listed in their wrong OAR are in their correct OAR on CinemaNow.

I can't see how Vudu can't just get the very same encodes they have, but they've been claiming in the forums that it's the studios fault and it takes time to get things corrected.

I think in over a year, they might have corrected 2. I completely blame Vudu and I'm kind of amazed they've done so little and that people are more upset.

But it's not. The 10-minutes preview has the correct aspect ratio, while the complete movie is cropped.

I wish I had read about this so I could have made a more informed decision on Battlefield Earth, McCabe and Mrs. Miller, Kelly's Heroes, Harper and They Live with Home D2D. I think I still might have gone for them, but it would've been useful information to have when narrowing down to a final 50.

Warner and VUDU ought to straighten this out.

The Lego Movie was corrected. I've noticed many Fox movies tend to be cropped on CinemaNow but correct on Vudu- including Diary of a Wimpy Kid- Dog Days, Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter, Epic and The Wolverine just to name a few.

I wrote to them about Kelly's Heroes, They Live and McCabe and Mrs. Miller, which are all correct on CinemaNow, and their reply suggested an unomfortable level of misinformation:

"Upon review, we are showing that "Kelly's Heroes" is showing in the correct aspect ratio, and "They Live".
We are showing that McCabe and Mrs Miller is showing in the incorrect aspect ratio"

If streaming is the future we might very well be ****ed if this is how things are going to go. At least when the studio releases cropped movies on physical media they know that they're doing it.

Is this list so pretty accurate? I ask because the 2-minute previews for both Raiders of the Last Ark and IJ Temple of Doom are in the correct AR. Does it switch to full-screen 16x9 after the opening credits or have they been corrected. I'd love to buy them but not if they are not in the correct in OAR.

The list hasn't been updated since 09-26-2013, so it's very possible that some of these have been corrected in the past year and a half.

A couple movies start out 2.40:1 so that the opening credits aren't cut off. Then switch to 16x9 after the credits. I know that it happens on both Raiders of the Lost Ark and Kelly's Heroes. I'm not sure about Temple of Doom.

If you have a Roku, you can scan past the 2-minute preview. Just push FF or use the right-directional button. I always check before buying. This might also work on other devices, but I haven't tried.

That trick also helps to determine if a movie is the Theatrical or Unrated cut. Sometimes the listings don't have the correct info. So I check out Movie-Censorship.com, then scan forward to see if those scenes are intact.

They also promote 7.1 yet so many titles available in true 7.1 are just 5.1 there.
