USA Enter Santo - The First Adventures of the Silver-Masked Man (Indicator)

Indicator has officially announced a Santo boxset for the U on December 6th, featuring two early films: Santo vs. Evil Brain, and Santo vs. Infernal Men.

Quote:
Synopsis

Immediately recognisable by his distinctive silver mask, the heroic wrestler known as El Santo (‘The Saint’) was Mexico’s most popular luchador, becoming a folk hero and the star of a hugely popular series of action films. Enter Santo: The First Adventures of the Silver-Masked Man presents the two earliest cinematic excursions of this icon of Mexican popular culture.

In Santo vs. Evil Brain (Santo contra cerebro del mal), the dastardly Doctor Campos is kidnapping and brainwashing scientists. When undercover detective Santo falls prey to Campos’ scheme, Lieutenant Zambrano (Enrique Zambrano) and El Incognito (Fernando Osés) must come to his assistance to foil Campos’ plans. Meanwhile, in the same year’s Santo vs. Infernal Men (Santo contra hombres infernales), the trio of Santo, El Incognito, and Zambrano team up once again to fight a band of drug smugglers.

Shot in Cuba in the final days before Fidel Castro entered Havana, these two films represent the celluloid birth of a true screen legend, and spawned a further fifty Santo films. Beautifully restored in 4K from the original negatives, these thrilling films finally receive their world Blu-ray premieres in this individually numbered Limited Edition two-disc set, complete with new and archival extra features, including a feature-length documentary, a poster, and an 80-page book.

Whew, they’re only doing 2 movies at a time? This is going to take awhile…

I'm not sure if they're doing anymore beyond these first two.

Very few of the Santos have OCNs or even presentable elements surviving. The later color ones especially only having battered 35mm release prints or faded tri-color elements.

Is this the first Blu-ray release of Santo movies in Spanish with subs? I believe so, and look forward to it!

If it's a good release and successful, hopefully they'll license and release more.

I have been waiting for this since I heard of Indicator's agreement with Permanencia Voluntaria. Hopefully this isn't the last El Santo release, off the top of my head every version of Baron Bracula I've seen is abysmal

This is cool as hell! Don't think I've ever seen these two and if I did I probably don't even remember them. I watched these flicks with my folks as kid growing up.

So, where can we buy the North American version of this? I have it on pre-order on amazon uk but i'd prefer the American version. It's not on wowhd, nor amazon. I'm sure it's on diabolik but being from Canada that's not a viable option for me. I find it weird that the UK version is everywhere (zavvi, amazon) but the American version is nowhere to be found.

It's on Diabolik DVD. I'm not sure why it's taken so long to be posted at sites like Amazon and others.

Didn’t realise this was a dual territory release.

Hopefully this means there’s no overlap between the Santo movies Indicator and Vinegar Syndrome are releasing.

That depends on how big the audience is for movies about masked wrestlers from Mexico from the 60's. There was a bit of chatter on the Vinegar Syndrome thread after they hinted at releasing some of these but it never set the thread on fire. Who knows. Everybody is striking gold with HK and martial arts - maybe this will be the new Gold Rush.

I'm definitely buying this set (love Santo movies even if i've never seen these two films yet!) but I really wished somebody would have made big sets, like Arrow are doing with Shaw Brothers. There are so many Santo and Mexican wrestling superheroes movies and while most are fun, I can't say i'm all that interested in paying a lot for simply one or two movies. But 14 in one set? Shelf spaces is precious these days haha. I might have to pick up Santo vs dr. Death too after I watch these.
