Universal Studios The Wild Robot 2

Quote:
After crossing $100M globally last weekend, The Wild Robot filmmaker Chris Sanders confirmed this morning at Deadline Contenders that a sequel to the pic is on the way and currently in development at DreamWorks Animation.

“100% yes there are absolutely plans for a second one,” Sanders confirmed this morning at Contenders.

Three-time Oscar nominee Sanders—the writer-director of DreamWorks Animation’s How to Train Your Dragon, The Croods, and Disney’s Lilo & Stitch — directed the animated feature from a screenplay he also penned. The film is produced by Jeff Hermann (DreamWorks Animation’s The Boss Baby 2: Family Business; co-producer, Kung Fu Panda franchise).

In the pic, which is an adaptation of Peter Brown’s award-winning bestseller of the same name, Oscar-winner Lupita Nyong’o plays a robot called ROZZUM unit 7134 — “Roz” for short — that is shipwrecked on an uninhabited island and must learn to adapt to the harsh surroundings, gradually building relationships with the animals on the island and becoming the adoptive parent of an orphaned gosling.

Fantastic news! I just read the second book last week and found it to be just as charming as the original. I'm going to check the third one next week.

The only thing is that the end of the movie features an epilogue that
[Show spoiler]actually takes place in the middle of the second book. Clearly they weren't sure if they'd be given the greenlight for the sequel, so they added that epilogue to give the first story some closure. So in adapting the second book, they're either going to have the first act function as a midquel or they're going to have to do some retooling.

I feel like the filmmakers already elevated a great book with their adaptation, and the second one has some real substance they can springboard off of. My hopes are very high for this.

Definitely excited for this! Only sad news is that it won't be made in-house at Dreamworks, so the new animators will have to do a lot of work to make the visual style match

Great news! I'm glad they're being able to given the good word of mouth, even if the film isn't setting the box office alight (though so few films do nowadays). It'll be a challenge to reach some of the emotional highs of the first (though admittedly I say this without knowing anything about the books), but if it's anything as visually and emotionall beautiful as the first, I'll be there!

There's two other books and this movie did well at the box office. I'm not surprised but it's great news. Loved the first film and I'll impatiently wait for the sequel(s).

Good, I have also read the second book and actually like it more than the first, so here is hoping that it does well at the box office so we can get a proper trilogy.
