Glad to hear MATEWAN is coming to blu-ray. It's a well-informed historical piece
conveying the political reality of its period setting, and a true American classic. I hope Criterion will follow up with John Sayle's only other masterwork, the contemporary western LONE STAR (1996) also starring Chris Cooper. |

SPOILER ALERT:
I managed a DVD store during the last decade. Circa 2006, MATEWAN cast member Kevin Tighe came into the store. I spoke with him about the film, and he mentioned seeing audiences applaud when he gets shot with a rifle. He was very pleased that people reacted that strongly to his performance. You may want to edit that with a spoiler tag. I have never seen this, but know about the film via it's reputation. That being said, I definitely will be blind buying it whenever it is released.

Well, a lot of people get shot or beaten up during the course of this film, so I don't consider my remark to be a spoiler. But I added a spoiler alert to my OP, just in case.

Excellent news. I've often felt this film fell through the cracks and has been forgotten, even in modern critical circles. Easily among the best American films ever made and truly deserving of the prestige and wider appeal Criterion brings.

The garbage DVD in the wrong aspect ratio and bad color helped it fall through the cracks.

Day One for me!
I do have a copy of the Canadian widescreen DVD release on the Seville label, which is better than the full-frame Artisan release. Its only supplement is a trailer, however, so Criterion's release will blow it away. My favorite Sayles film remains RETURN OF THE SEACAUCAS SEVEN, but MATEWAN is a close second. |

As one of the biggest 70's and 80's fan I have to ask myself: HOW IN THE HELL I've been managed to avoid this film all these decades??? This is literally the first time I hear the movie. I don't understand, I really don't.
Wow, a decent cover from Criterion. Haven't seen that kind of miracle for a loooong time. |

Probably so, and not that this will change the minds of some, but there was an interesting video clip on the HTF just the other day addressing that very issue for this very release. Lee Kline from Criterion said that Haskell Wexler had created a timed answer print, which Criterion used for their work on Matewan. In addition to that, they had John Sayles also approve of their final version. Kline even says that he found some of the color choices strange; that he would have dialed back some of the cyan or teal push, but in the end, they trusted and followed the Wexler print.
