It could go either way, if you use analog hook up that means you are using the digital to analog converter in the cd player, while using a digital connection means you are using the digital to analog converter in your receiver.Whichever converter is of higher quality should produce the better sound.Also in most cases a coax digital cable will produce better sound than an optical cable.
