As the stakes escalate and their lives begin to unravel, the crew initiates its most dangerous and complex heist.

Taking inspiration from the late Chicago police detective Charlie Adamson – who killed the actual Neil McCauley in a shootout in 1963 – HEAT was the culmination of years of research by Mann resulting in its depth and range of characters and choreography of action. With its epic scale and stunning performances from Pacino, De Niro, Val Kilmer, Tom Sizemore, Ashley Judd, Amy Brenneman, Diane Venora, Natalie Portman and Jon Voight, HEAT is as incendiary as it was 20 years ago.

Fox Home Entertainment is targeting early 2017 for a release of the restoration, which looked incredible, Spinotti’s cityscape imagery as dazzling as ever. Indeed, “Heat” maintains an interesting place in Mann’s filmography, before he took the digital plunge and captured the nighttime look of the city so accurately in “Collateral.” It’s built with more classical imagery, kissed by lens flares, painting a dream-like atmosphere that is nevertheless a dark place where men break the law and others hunt them for it.

A remaster is all but confirmed, thx to Fox's James Finn and Variety article:

The film’s 20th anniversary is thankfully not going unnoticed, though it does come at a time when the Regency catalog is shifting away from Warner Bros. and over to Fox, slowing things down a little bit. A screening and Q&A event has been set for the Toronto Film Festival Tuesday night with Mann in attendance. I’m also told plans are in motion for Fox to release a special DVD/Blu-ray next year. “We have a great relationship with him,” Fox Home Entertainment EVP James Finn told me. “We did the definitive edition on ‘The Last of the Mohicans’ and he loves our team and restoration guys. We’re going to honor it.”

So, special edition is coming next year; maybe it will still be labeled as a 20th Anniv. edition (studios don't care about the math), maybe not, but who cares. In my opinion, there's not a doubt that it will be a (4K) remaster.[/QUOTE]
