Default Stepford Wives (1975) on bluray?

I wonder when we’ll get this cult classic on bluray? Surprised we haven’t seen it already, given the market for horror on bluray.

Surely someone like Shout! or Kino will pick up this gem sooner rather than later?

Absolutely classic! Nothing beats the original. I still have the dvd, and would love to upgrade it.

Yes - bring this great '70's film on Blu, pronto. Creepy as he$$, with some interesting social commentary.

As far as I can tell, the regular DVD is long OOP.

The 200X version (with Nicole Kidman) was awful. It just made me appreciate the original all the more.

Note that the original 1972 Stepford Wives novel (by author Ira Levin) is worth checking out as well.

From Mr Lime:
"I've heard Paramount paid [Bristol-Myers/Squibb] a very large amount [for the DVD license] which included remake rights. PM remade ["The Heartbreak Kid", "Sleuth", and "The Stepford Wives"] and released the originals on DVD, now they're all out of print and the very rich company expects the same type of payment for these titles from the next licensee, otherwise they say its not worth their time. I would be surprised if they every get released again in the U.S., unless they end selling the library outright which also includes few other Palomar titles or someone stupid overpays for them."

I'm not sure it would be any better if Paramount *did* own the rights, and they seem like the other option.

Thanks for finding that quote. Looks like the chances are low that we'll ever get a BR release. That's a shame since this is a really good movie.

The original novel is a good read too with only a few differences.

It is absurd to me that this has not been issued on Blu-ray. This film is a classic. I'd love to see Criterion get a hold of it, though they probably wouldn't deem it worthy.

Better yet Vinegar Syndrome or Arrow if possible.

The Stepford Wives '75 definitely needs to be on Blu; as time passes the DVD is harder to get ahold of for a decent price. And, the DVD print definitely needs an upgrade.

Agreed. For some reason I don't see Criterion as being a good "fit" for releasing this film on Blu. I also feel either Vinegar Syndrome or Arrow would be better distributor(s).

It would be a wildcard for Criterion, but they've put out some stuff that I'd never have expected before (Eating Raoul, Equinox, The Breakfast Club) so it wouldn't be entirely crazy. It could fit in nicely as an addition to their small number of horror titles, and it is a historically significant film given the subject matter and themes.

I read in a separate thread that The Stepford Wives is owned by Bristol-Meyers Squibb, a pharmaceutical company that funded and ran Palomar Pictures as an offshoot operation. Apparently the rights are tied up with them and that is why the film hasn't been reissued. I was hoping Paramount still had rights to it (they did in 2004 when they reissued the DVD), as Scream Factory now has access to Paramount's catalogue (Criterion does too, for that matter).

I don't like saying never, but Stepford Wives will probably never get released.

Bristol Meyers-Squibb formed Palomar Pictures in 1972, releasing such films as SLEUTH, THE STEPFORD WIVES, THE HEARTBREAK KID, THE STRANGE VENGEANCE OF ROSALIE, and a few others. As such, BM-S legitimately owns those films. Too bad for us that they're not interested in them.

At some point someone will painstakingly explain to them that their asking price is ridiculous, and they should just get their heads together and license them. They’re not making any money on them just by sitting on them.

A shame such a pretty significant piece of pop culture from the 70s is in the void.

Just bagged this on tape. Going through my stuff from the other day it’s like 90% stuff that’s not on Blu and tied up for some reason (TSW, Little Darlings, Bad Lieutenant, Star 80, etc).

Which if my estimations are correct means all of these will be announced within the next week.

I recently saw The Stepford Wives (1975) for the first time (at least I think it was the first time) and everyone is correct. It is a horror gem from the past and it’s such a shame that damn company is holding it hostage. Since official Blu-ray and 4K UHD releases seem never likely to happen, this is one of those times when an unofficial copy is welcome by me.

I remember seeing the 2004 remake years ago and what a pile of shite that is.
