Default Upscaled DVD is equal to BD--So says Toshiba

So it MUST be true.

http://www.smarthouse.com.au/HD/HD_DVD/Q8H5L3T5

Of course, one then has to wonder why Toshiba lost hundreds of millions of dollars and put two years of labor into convincing people to buy red in the first place when all they had to do was market upconverters.

Unless they're really NOT the same.

I am getting tired of that line. Toshiba I can understand, but other people who should know better seem to want so desperately for that to be true.

Is this some kind of joke?

I love this line:

They also claim that a consumer will struggle to notice the difference if playing it on a new generation plasma or LCD TV.
Apparently, watching a movie upscaled to 1080p is the same when watching a movie in 1080p w/120Hz...

Idiots.

just incredible.

I can understand them trying to place value in their current HD DVD hardware by talking up the upconversion feature for SD. But that stretch about it looking like native 1080p is utter bunk.

Of course, maybe consumers can't tell the difference when viewing on TOSHIBA-brand LCD televisions... because they can't reveal the benefits of full 1080p native resolution...

Its the same thing as their recent statement about digital downloads. I'm paraphrasing but something like 'Digital Downloads are the future of home video anyway'. If they really felt like that, why waste all the time and money?

In reality, upscaled dvd DOES look a ton better than standard dvd, however its not on par with either blu-ray or hd-dvd. Throw in the predictions of even bigger televisions coming down the line, and that makes the need for HD even stronger.

Digital downloads will probably be very common, but not for a long long time. Just from the download aspect, its not time. It takes ages to download, and increasingly more ISP are throttling bandwidth making it take even longer. Ad that to the other problems associated with it (compression, lack of a physical object you can 'own', inability to take a movie to a friends house and watch it, etc) and DD are a long way off.

It's obvious Toshiba is simply trying to save face, and will change their tune around the time they begin to support blu-ray.

Let them say whatever they want. We get it all now, every studio support there is. The only semi big one that is left that I would like to hear from is Weinstein.

i have been noticing this statement alot from the red fanboys all over forums, and all i can think is "then why did you go out and spend 25-35 for red titles that are the same quality as upconvert? hmmm funny how suddenly real 1080p doesnt matter.
