Default Generally, how are Paramount & Universal transfer wise?

For HD DVD owners, were their releases good quality or kind of shady like FOXes

Well, Paramount has already released titles on Blu before... I hear Shooter has some really great picture quality. I heard somewhere that Universal is going to have to redo all of their movies, as they can't use the same transfers that they did with HD DVD, but I'm not totally sure. I hope it is true and they can do some higher bitrate encodes, plus lossless audio of course.

A lot of Fox transfers are top notch. Warner has many more shotty transfers. If they are using VC-1, the port would probably look like garbage. There is a lot of potential, but they would have to do a new encode. HD DVD ports make the elderly cry.

The reports I have seen on Universal haven't been very enthusiastic. I am glad to hear they will have to do new transfers for Blu, hopefully they will get them right this time.

The Paramount titles I have (Black Snake Moan, Disturbia, Shooter, Coming To America, and Untouchables) are all pretty good IMO. Right before they went HD DVD exclusive they were starting to do seperate transfers for HD DVD and Blu-ray (which made their switch even more odd). Shooter caught some flack because it's an MPEG2 title, but it looks pretty damn good to me.

I can't speak on Universal's quality, but generally their titles are some of the lower-ranked titles for reviews.

I don't see why they couldn't use the same video and audio encodes but it's a sure thing that they need to re-author the disc. So I'm not sure that we'll get new encodes (and to re do a new encode will surely cost money so you can bet that unless there is no other way, they'll stick with what they already have...)

But I'm not an expert on this, so I guess we'll have to wait and see!

They would need to redo all their encodes because HD DVD encodes on a blu-ray disc look like cat poop.

I rented Shooter on Blu and the PQ was A+. I hope all of Paramount's future releases are just as good.

No, they do not need to redo all of their encodes. Most of the encodes from Paramount and the big releases from Universal are on par with the best of Blu-ray.

Well kind of,

Paramount did a good job on their Blu-ray releases. But generally, HD DVD ports onto blu-ray look and sound poor, no matter what studio they come from (ask every Ocean's trilogy owner). Every studio now needs to make sure that the specs for their Blu-ray releases are up to snuff and utilize the capabilities of the technology.

Paramount titles were consistently very good, even their BD-25 titles.

Sleepy Hollow came in for a bit of flak, but this was probably due to the material they had to work with. I would imagine it was shot on pretty fast film and many scenes are pretty dark. Grain was possibly introduced to the lighter scenes to match the dark ones.

So if the eagerly anticipated "Transformers" is of the quality of "Black Rain" or "The Untouchables", you won't be disappointed. Also it was mentioned on this forum that the BD transfer of "Transformers" was supervised by Michael Bay. I can't vouch for this though. I would imagine that this would be an early title, as it was also mentioned a while back that the pressing blank was in existence for this title.

Just as an asibe regarding quality... the worst Blu-ray that I posses is from Warner Bros... "Rio Grande". The picture is DVD quality though again this was probably due to the material they had to work with.

The transfers are comparable to blu-ray. There are good and bad transfers on both side. Shooter, King Kong, Transformers, Ray, The Kingdom, Elizabeth......very very good transfers.

Paramount are good, not superb, but good overall. They new release are very good and the do an good job with catalog..

Universal is very good for New Release but generally use crappy old 1080 master from 10 years old filled with Edge Enhancement for Catalog Release

They started good with catalog and in 2007 it have been going down and down with the quality..

I heard the Children of Men import Blu-Ray looks excellent. That might be a good place for Universal to Start their releases from.... It's just a thought.

If what I heard is true, Universal was planning to redo all the movies because the HD DVD transfers "were not good enough" for Blu-ray. Go figure.
