So far I love it. I never realized what I was missing! And don't even get me started on how far superior a machine the PS3 is as compared to the Xbox 360. It's not even close.
Anyway, I only have one real problem with the thing: It won't output audio from HDMI and optical simultaneously!! My receiver does not do HDMI, so I wanted to use the HDMI cable for audio to the television and optical for the sound system. And it's kind of a pain to switch the audio output, you have to go into the PS3's menu and change settings, it's real inconvenient. I'm racking my brain trying to think of a better way to do this but I'm not sure what would work. There has to be a way to connect the PS3 so that it routes audio to both the TV and the receiver, right? I was thinking that component cables might allow me to run video and analog audio to the TV, and still transmit through the optical to the stereo, but I'm not sure if it would work or not.....anybody know??? |

Do you have optical out on your tv? If so plug all your hdmi's to the tv and use the optical to go from the tv to your receiver

Anyway, I figured out how to work this, if anybody else has a similar situation. I just ditched the HDMI for component cables, ran the optical audio into the receiver, and then ran RCA cables from the receiver's tape loop into the TV's audio in. Works like a charm! The only downside is that you still have to turn on the receiver to pass the signal to the TV, but that's not so bad. |

Also, you're going to get much better sound through the HDMI than through optical. You can't listen to any of the uncompressed tracks through optical, so I would suggest leaving the HDMI hooked up. |

Welcome to the forum BA. You got yourself a beast there as in PS3. As per audio, no luck there. It outputs via one channel at a time.

You DON'T NEED to ditch the HDMI cable to run audio via optical. Just set the video to HDMI and audio via optical if you want to listen to full surround. Change the audio back to HDMI if you don't want to disturb the neighbors. Quote:

Also, I don't care about wasting electricity, I care about having to go into menus and sub-menus and making check-marks in little damn boxes to get the sound to go where I want. It's embarrassing that a $600 piece of equipment can't do this when any old crappy DVD player from freaking Wal-Mart has no problems with it. Last edited by big angry; 02-22-2008 at 08:54 AM. |

So turn your subwoofer off, or use night mode.
I could be wrong anymore, but also by forgoing the HDMI cable there is a nominal loss in image quality, but do you not also lose the ability to output 1080p and upconvert DVD playback? Not relevant to all, but surely worth mentioning. |

I got many of the same kind of replys and actually, most people didn't even understand what I was saying and said I probably needed a professional to help me install it cause it didn't sound like I knew what I was doing. (https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...ht=malfunction) I had named the thread, PS3 Malfunction I'd like to keep, cause sometimes, my t.v. will have sound through the HDMI hook up. I called Sony early on and asked them if there was setting that would allow sound to pass through both at the same time (like my DVD player). I wanted sound through my t.v and WHEN I WANTED, sound through my home theater. (I don't want big sound everytime). Anyway, they said this was a hardware issue and there were no firmware updates planned. Basically, what we have is it. They simply can't change it because it is a hardware issue. However, I often times get sound out of my hdmi hook up. And if it comes on, it stays on the whole time, unless I reboot the PS3. I've heard/read about many others who have seen this as well. Obviously, that means it can be done. Some have guessed that it occurs when shutting down in a certain sequence. I don't know, but it seems like a simple function that even the oldest DVD players had and it's annoying to have to go into the sub-settings, just to play sound through my t.v. But just so you know, I called, the answer is no - it's not going to get changed/updated. However, the PS3 does so much that this minor annoyance can most of the time be ignored by me. But I wouldn't mind if my "malfunction" stayed that way. Hope that helps. Take it easy, |

Yeah, it's annoying for sure, but like I said I found a way to work around it so I'm happy.
Switching from HDMI to component is no big deal since my TV doesn't do 1080p anyway. I can certainly live with 720. |

As for upconverting DVD's, that's not necessary because I have a standalone Pioneer unit that does that AND can output audio to HDMI and optical at the same time......imagine that, what a novel concept. ![]() |
