I tried that but once you pass through the TV you lose the digital signal (the receiver only gets stereo which it converts to Dolby PLIIx).

Anyway, I figured out how to work this, if anybody else has a similar situation.
I just ditched the HDMI for component cables, ran the optical audio into the receiver, and then ran RCA cables from the receiver's tape loop into the TV's audio in.

Works like a charm! The only downside is that you still have to turn on the receiver to pass the signal to the TV, but that's not so bad.
