Default Would Someone Be Kind Enough...

To tell me why a 61 inch sony wega 1080p is $1800 and a sony bravia 1080p 52 inch is $2700? Im looking for a new tv and can't choose between the two. I asked the guy at best buy why the bravia is about a thousand more if the wega is 1080p too but so much bigger? Which is better? the guy at best buy couldn't answer my question on the differences between the two.

Which model numbers are you talking about? It sounds like the WEGA you're talking about might be a rear projection while the 52" Bravia is an LCD flat panel judging by the difference in price.

Yes exactly don't know the models but the bravia is a lcd flat panel and the wega is rear projection.

It is less expensive to make a rear projection. LCD's and plasma TV's are always more expensive. Rear projection is the way to go though, you usually get more bang for your buck.

yeah i thought the 61 inch looked better but couldn't figure out why the other one was more expensive i was thinking it had some special features or something. so how exactly is the rear projection made to make it less expensive?

Using that same reasoning, then buying standard DVDs instead of Blu-ray discs will give you more bang for your buck.

To me, the LCD (and Blu-ray) is the way to go.

I don't get how you gather your reasoning? He's saying it's less expensive to make a RPTV and therefore they cost less. Hence, if you're paying the same price for a TV, a RPTV vs. an LCD/Plasma, you'll be getting a bigger TV.

He's not saying "it costs less so it's better".

I disagree, I have a 40 inch Sony V3000 and I love it, I had an opportunity to buy the 50 inch SXRD but decided to take the flat because I got a great deal on it. $1100 bucks, not too shabby for that TV.

But the LCD will blow the projection away, not to mention if its the WEGA and not the SXRD then its only a midgrade Sony. Flat panel picture kills rear projection if you compare the same level of TV from the same company...in other words the V series is head and shoulders above the WEGA series and they are both midgrade from Sony.

But its up to you, if you want bigger get the WEGA, if you want better, get the LCD. Im sure youll love it either way! Happy shopping

yeah i know both tvs weren't playing in 1080p and ive heard from numerous friends that you can't beat 1080p lcd. Im leaning towards the bravia.

I wouldn't say LCD is better because it is still limited by the screen size and larger 60" and above good quality screen are way too expensive. Watching a movie filmed in 2:35:1 aspect ratio on a 40 inch or even a 52 inch is too small of a picture in my book even though the picture is awesome. I hope the price of the larger screen flat panel TV (65" to 73") would come down fast.

I agree that the price is pretty crazy on the larger flat LCD tvs, in my case the room the TV is in isnt huge so 40 works. BUT I do wish it was bigger, around 50. I got a really good price on the 40V3000 so I went ahead and got it. My goal is to move that one to my bedroom within a year or two once the larger LCDs come down to a reasonable price, say $1500 bucks or so for a good 1080p 50 inch.

But for the money you cant beat a rear projection size wise. Thats why I recommended if its pure size he wants go rear projection, but if its picture quality go flat.

BTW, I dont think that the TV he is talking about is the SXRD listed above. He said the WEGA which if he is correct that its a WEGA and not an SXRD then it is the 3LCD model which is not 120htz and I dont think it does 24p either(it may but Im just not sure). The W series flat panel does the 24p which is huge! He said the 61 inch was only 1800 bucks so it has to be the WEGA 3LCD unless the SXRD was on sale.

Now is a good time to get an SXRD because Sony is discontinuing all of the rear projection TVs and going strictly flat panel, so the rear projection should be dropping in price rather quickly to make room for the new flat ones.
