Default Blu-ray is great - pricey listings on Amazon.co.jp, though

I decided the battle of the format wars had been won by Sony's Blu-ray so I went out and bought a new Playstation 3 solely for watching blu-rays. Got my first blu-rays yesterday; Goodfellas, The Prestige and Ronin. The picture quality and sound is simply stunning... BUT... that's the last of my purchases for the foreseeable future. i'm not prepared to fork out $25+ to watch a movie, no matter how good the quality. Now that Warner has made up it's mind, and Sony clearly has an unbeatable lead, it's time for the studios and manufacturers to reward it's loyal customers by bring the price of the media down to <$20.

Until that day happens I'll be buying DVDs again because the quality difference between the two is not worth an additional $10-$20.

Edit:

ok, i walked into that i guess.

well, i've gone onto amazon.com instead of .co.jp and sure enough you guys get a lot of bargains. i have just ordered the following:

1 "The Fifth Element [Blu-ray]"
Bruce Willis; Blu-ray; $19.95

Sold by: Amazon.com1 "Training Day [Blu-ray]"
Denzel Washington; Blu-ray; $14.95

Sold by: Amazon.com1 "Unforgiven [Blu-ray]"
Beverley Elliott; Blu-ray; $19.95

Sold by: Amazon.com1 "The Last Samurai [Blu-ray]"
Ken Watanabe; Blu-ray; $18.95

Sold by: Amazon.com1 "Vertical Limit [Blu-ray]"
Chris O'Donnell; Blu-ray; $16.95

Sold by: Amazon.com1 "Blood Diamond [Blu-ray]"
Leonard DiCaprio; Blu-ray; $14.95

Sold by: Amazon.com1 "The Patriot (Extended Cut) [Blu-ray]"
Mel Gibson; Blu-ray; $16.95

Sold by: Amazon.com1 "Underworld (Unrated) [Blu-ray]"
Kate Beckinsale; Blu-ray; $16.95

Sold by: Amazon.com1 "Blade Runner (Five-Disc Complete Collector's Edition) [Blu-ray]"
Harrison Ford; Blu-ray; $27.95

Sold by: Amazon.com1 "Spider-Man - The High Definition Trilogy (Spider-Man / Spider-Man 2 / Spider-Man 3) [Blu-ray]"
Tobey Maguire; Blu-ray; $48.95

Sold by: Amazon.com1 "The Aviator [Blu-ray]"
Alec Baldwin; Blu-ray; $19.95

Sold by: Amazon.com1 "Ocean's Trilogy (Ocean's Eleven/ Ocean's Twelve/ Ocean's Thirteen) [Blu-ray]"
Brad Pitt; Blu-ray; $54.95

Honestly, I'm not cheap, I was just knocked sideways by the prices being quoted in Japan on Amazon.co.jp.

And yes, I should have done much more research about the media but it's one of those things, i fired then aimed.

New blu-rays arriving in a few days and eagerly awaiting them.

As for the quality of the equipment I purchased, the pioneer 50" is state of the art and definitely not for cheapskates.

Once again, apologies for not following this forum's protocol. All i saw was General Discussion and that's all my intention was. If I could remove the thread or change the title i would do so.

I own over 70 Blu-ray discs now and the average price I've paid is under $15. Most were actually in the $10-12 range. I haven't bought a single movie for over $20.

Just like DVD, you have to wait for the deals if you want them cheap.

Sorry you feel that way. Apparently, you are one of those people who can't appreciate the better audio and picture - either due to a bad setup, using the wrong cables, or you just are physically incapable of seeing a difference.

The main point is: Keep enjoying your movies, regardless. If standard DVD is good enough, bully for you.

I, for one, smell a troll.... either that, or someone that obviously knows not what he is talking about.

seriously not a troll. just a new blu-ray owner that thinks now the war has been won the price should come down rapidly. btw, i live in tokyo and there are no discounts on the blurays here.

im just keeping everything in order here, and new people that open threads to start talking like that will deserve harsh treatment. maybe you should have lurked a little while longer until you were satisfied with making blu ray purchases. i still think your a troll.

I don't understand, if you were getting a PS3 for Blu-ray only, then why not just wait? Chances are, the PS3 would have dropped in price by the time discs are at a price that's acceptable to you? Clearly you did some research before buying, did you not research the most basic component, the movies themselves?

I was at HMV today and they had a selection of BD's at 2 for $30. Considering HMV is not especially known for their cheap prices on anything, I take that as a good sign. Between in-store sales, Amazon and Ebay, I'm quite happy with the prices I've paid for all my Blu-rays.

I wouldn't expect to pay the same for 24K gold that I did for 14K, so I do expect to pay a bit more to take full advantage of the couple of grand I spent on my TV as opposed to what I spent to watch movies on my old 27" tube.

Can you post information about your setup? A/V processor, speakers, display? I'm interested in what is causing your Blu-ray experience to be not good enough.

Edit: What sound reason is there for Blu-ray content to come down in price?

It took YEARS for VHS and DVD to come down in price. And I don't think that $30 is that bad. I remember buying VHS movies (the widescreen editions) for $40-50 (when the full frame ones were only about $25). With inflation between then and now, the $30 starting point seems like a bargain.

I think people conveniently forget how much DVDs and VHS went for in the beginning. I think they also got used to the "sale" prices at most stores. New releases MSRP pretty high, but due to the mass appeal, stores discount them right off the bat. People like yourself have just gotten spoiled.

Sorry about the troll bit. We get them every so often, and their posts usually start out like yours.

Thier cheap, they don't want to spend $25 on a movie.

BUT what about when movies do come down in price & then your end up double dipping & will probly end-up costing more then $25

Sure.

Brand new Pioneer PDP-LX508G
Panasonic HiDef Cable box (not much choice in Japan)
New PS3 40GB (2007 edition with the quiet fan etc)

Perhaps I should clarify as people think I'm a troll when genuinely I just got this stuff yesterday.

I really really like the quality, it's fantastic. I guess I'm not enough of an aficionado though to pay the premium for the media. Now maybe it's cos it's such a ripoff buying it here is Japan (which is ironic as it was invented here) so maybe the solution for me is to stock in New York everytime I go there.

Did not mean to rattle anyone's cages, just thought they can now make this stuff a lot cheaper.
