Default Toshiba HD-A2 player.....may be the best bargain in electronics right now

I realize this may amount to blasphemy for some on this forum but rest assured I am not trolling.

I just bought the Toshiba HD-DVD player at Wal-Mart. They're on closeout for 74 dollars and some change.

So, if you're not planning on getting rid of your standard DVD's and you're looking for a great player, you might want to head over to your nearest Wal-Mart. You're getting a great upconverting DVD player with HDMI for a pittance, and at the same time you're extending the life of your Blu-Ray player.

I realize that many here would never consider buying an HD-DVD player. But for those of us not so emotionally invested in the format war, this is a killer deal.

Yes, they can. But if you're like me, and your Blu-Ray player is a PS3, then you might not care to use it for DVD's all the time.

What's the difference between putting a BD in a slot and a SD DVD in a slot?

dude it was still a big waste of 74 dollars! why do people insist on buying dead format that is "priced well". seriously would you pay 75 dollars for a betamax player? to me paying anything for an HD DUD player is stupid. IMO

There's no difference, other than the fact that you're extending the life of the player by not using it all the time.

DVD is not a "dead format". Standard DVDs are going to be around for quite a long, long time.

Perhaps you missed the point, but I didn't buy this thing to watch HD-DVDs on. I bought it for regular DVDs (and CDs).

The question is: why waste money on a dead format?

I honestly doubt that playing DVD's will shorten the life of it at all... take that 74+ tax and buy a game or some BD's... no reason to have an extra box on the setup that wouldn't do anything your other components already do.

Just my $0.02

Maybe this should have been posted somewhere like...oh I don't know...highdefdigest.com? A site that covers both formats?

But to suggest buying a cheap upscaling HD DVD player on a site called blu-ray.com...

Consider that any given device has a certain life......x amount of hours before it fails.

So it stands to reason that if I only use my PS3 to play games and Blu-Rays, it will last much longer than it would if I were using it to play regular DVD's and CD's as well. Theoretically.

isn't 74 bucks for an upscaling player still pricey? I'd rather buy a second bd player/ps3, or a dvd upscaler(if i wanted to be cheap).

I'm sorry if you find this offensive in some way. That was certainly not my intention.

Well, it was cheaper than any of the upscaling HDMI players they had there. And of much better build quality.

And you can't buy another Blu-Ray player for 74 dollars. Trust me. If you could I'd have bought 4 or 5 of them by now.

ill second this.

i probably wont be going out and buying one because i dont have the coin to drop on anything else other than bills right now, but i have a ton of dvds that i will still be watching, im sure, in the near to distant future. Especially considering bd releases have been rather slow even though i know the release dates for bd's will start ramping up quite a bit now after all this post war stuff gets straightened out.

i think it'd be a decent investment for an up-convert player if you dont already have an upconvert player and if you still have tons and tons of sd dvds that a release date on bd is nowhere in sight for.

every one take a deep breath lol ...... i hear what your saying man, what you did was honestly a consideration of mine since i don't have cable and i know i push my blu player hard since its my only source of media at the moment. and i watch plenty of sddvd and i agree with any player, the more you use it the greater chance something will go wrong. some people are a little hyped up on mountain dew and ready to hate

I ended getting the hd-dvd add on for the 360 for $50. With 6 free movies..it wasn't a bad deal. I actually just bought it to watch transformers. lol.
