I've searched the forums, and can't find a post that really nails this answer for me - so here it goes...
I am using an Onkyo 702, have 2 Era Design 4's for the front, and and a Design 4 LCR for the center. I have two Design 3's for the rears. The D4's sound amazing with my crossover set at 60hz. (I rarely use a sub since my movie room is right next to the kids rooms. So at night, I am a low volume watcher.) My question is about what kinds of frequency ranges can get sent to the rears? Since the D3's need a crossover closer to 80hz, should I have the receiver set to that? Or do the rear channel effects never really approach what comes out of the front? Sorry for the noob question - but its just not clear to me how critical it is to match specs for the front and rear channels as long as the speakers are voice matched. |

I did find this post on AVS forum David Solomon who works on these Era speakers:
Dave. 5's as mains 4's as rear surrounds 3's as side surrounds Mainly due to size and placement concerns.....would this set up be to wierd? Paul, this is a perfectly fine system. Very similar to the multi channel system I used at CES 07. I used D5's for the front and center w/ D3's as the rear channel w/ the AVR300. David The whole thread: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/archi.../t-488110.html So I guess this had turned into a question more about what frequency ranges do get sent to the back, and should the crossover on the receiver be set to the weakest link (80hz for the D3's) or for the front (60hz for the D4's) and let them open up. |

If you are not using a sub then the crossover is not used and speaker should be set to large. The crossover is only used when using a sub.
