720p Blu Ray Support - Blu-ray Forum

Hello All, i'm new to the forum, and as it happens a new owner of the shiney great thing that is the PS3. I have read a few other forums from early last year that seem to indicate the PS3 won't play BluRay movies at 720p resolution?

I have a 32" Samsung HD tv that has 480i, 480p, 720p resolutions and i'm worried the PS3 will just downscale the blue ray output to 480p? But surely as i have a 720p panel that would be the nearest progressive resolution?

Can anyone clear this up for me please?

The PS3 does 720p just fine.

Mine plays games, Blu-rays, DVD's and downloaded movie trailers at 720p output with no problems.

You may need the latest firmware but it does do 720p now.

If you own a new PS3, your firmware already supports Blu-ray downscaling to 720p. If you purchased one that's been somehow been sitting on shelves for about 12 months, then you might need to update the firmware. I think 720p downscaling was introduced very early... somewhere around firmware 1.80 or so, and we're on version 2.10 now.

So if you need to, update the firmware, and things will be just fine.
