If I were you I would not bother with either player until after CES, prices will go down when new models/G2 players are announced. For that matter I would not buy any electronic equipment in December, never have/will, CES is too important for pricing. As soon as G2 players are announced the price of the Panny and Sammy will go down like a lead balloon.

I agree.

Electronic conventions always bring prices of tech goods down (on a global scale).

You have your CES, CEDIA, IFA in Berlin, etc.

Isn't the CES the second week of Jan? so the plans fit.
The current state of play is:-
HD-DVD 2 players almost the same, one more expensive and a few more features. There is a third player (RCA)that is just a rebadge.
Blu Ray players
Now there are 4 players Samsung, Philips, Panasnic & Sony. The Pioneer should be out by then and who knows how many others will be out. There are also 2 burners released (in Japan only).

In other countries that are a little backward such as Australia, only have Blu Ray (although HD-DVD has been oficcally released no players have been released).

As far as media on paper there are about 10 more titles that have been released for HD-DVD. Just remember Sony has one plant making 60,000 disks a day. There are many other plsnts making blu ray. Unsure about HD-DVD. Then the number of titles available to blu ray are so much greater. Columbia Tri Star, Sony Pictures, MGM, Fox, Disney and others only available on Blu Ray. Warner & Paramount releasing for both HD-DVD and Blu Ray and Universal HD-DVD only. You work out who is going to win!
I don't know enough about the games consoles to comment, but the PS3 can play Blu Ray.

i know blu-ray has more studio support and al that but there are always so many rumors going around about some of those BR exclusive studios will be going to hd-dvd.

also for some reason blu-ray isnt releasing any of those great movies they can.
like batman begins, kill bill, matrix, gangs of new york, constantine, sin city,
and so many more.

so when is that ces or whatever it is called. and what happens at this event?

We'll have to see first. Although I admit that majority of those mentioned by you are Warner Brothers titles and it seems that WB is a little bit more biased for HD-DVD (yet is the opposite for their Japan division). We can only hope that Time Warner steps in to restore the balance.

As for Disney and perhaps Fox moving to the "dark" side, well, I don't see that happening just yet considering that Blu-ray is bouncing back (or making a comeback).

Speaking of which, does anyone know as to who is in the lead atm? (Blu-ray or 'HD-DUD')?

Question

What other benefits the "waiting" can give for both players and displays?

Besides displaying billions of colors (deep color) to eliminate color banding and other color-based noise, higher contrast ratios, 120Hz refresh rate or other 24fps-friendly rate for "motion artifact"-free movie experience, wirelessHD, longer running times, higher bitrates to completely eliminate artifacts, higher resolution to comply with masters shot on >16mm films

I very much doubt that anything other than 120Hz displays are going to affect BD in the near-term (12-18 months), WirelessHD is most definitely in it's infancy. The most important things we will see are HDMI 1.3 decoders with DTS-HDMA and DD-TrueHD compliance.

Man you almost sound like me. Are you my clone?

well except, that 16mm = DVD (Specially PAL DVD)

So I would have said: "higher resolution to comply with masters shot on 70mm films"

Doubtful. This war will be on for several years, unless a clear a big adoption of one side occurs. And that means several million adoptees with the other side stuck in hundreds of thousands.

The PS/3 sales alone aren't good enough, they have to be seen to be causing BD disc sales.

The movies look amazing. The PS/3 will be one of the best Blu-ray players. It boots fast. Has full codec support. And will be BD Live compatible when that is launched. And Sony is committed to improving things from here, which a more general computing platform like the PS/3 easily allows.

The PS/3 does not currently upconvert DVD, but a recent run-down of development goals says they are looking at doing a state-of-the-art upconversion. There is so much power in the PS/3, that 720x480 MPEG-2 decoding is using very little of it.

The rumours are more like wishful thinking from the HD DVD camp. They desperately want it, and know it must occur for HD DVD.

The Disney rumour has been perpetuated one prominant HD DVD retailer as:

By July
By the end of summer
By the end of 2006

And his latest is "early 2007".

The latest rumour has the Wii adding HD DVD support. They used to ditz the idea of a game machine driving adoption. Now, it's all talk about Xbox 360 add-ons and Wii.

If Blu-ray is looking like a bust next spring AND HD DVD is piling on the sales, then I would expect to see some motion. But, if the PS/3 is selling well, and generating a decent adoption rate, the studios will realize that this rate is perpetual, versus having to wait for conventional adoption of HD DVD.

The studios decide what to release, not the format. And people always complain that not enough of the A-list come out quickly enough when a new format is released.

Batman, Matrix, and Constantine are Warner. Two of those are out on HD DVD. The Matrix was promised for HD DVD release, and never materialized.

Kill Bill, Gangs of New York are Miramax (Disney/BVHE) and BVHE has just begun shipping titles.

Sin City is from Dimension Films which is now part of The Weinstein Company, who are HD DVD exclusive, but Disney may still control the distribution of this title. But like Spiderman, I would expect to see the disc come out as a part of releases promoting the theatrical sequals next year.

PS3 curently does NOT upsample DVDs. Not like a normal person can tell the diffrence, enthusiasts can.

However PS3's Blu-ray playback is a bit flawed, It lacks 720p playback which all standalones support. 1080i is still gona look good, however for all those who have 720p sets, should wait for Sony's big firmware update in march.

As for the winner. Blu-ray. Eventually. HD-DVD is bascally the second comming of the Laser Disc. It had short lived popularity, but failed to grab the mainstream.
Think about it. The only dudes that buy HD-DVD are enthusiast that have a vendeta against Sony. That's not very many people. On the other hand, Sony has PS3 which is a Blu-ray player. If even only 5% of current PS3 owners buy Blu-ray, thats thousands of users not going to HD-DVD. That number will continue to grow over time, untill HD-DVD is obsured to niche anti -Sony fanboy groups.

Does MSFT's 360 HD-DVD add on gona make a difference. No, it's gonna be a complete failure. Why, because Majority of Xbox 360 users are perfectly fine with the Xbox as it already is. They can play DVDs on it already, but for most part people play DVDs on standalone players rather than gaming systems. PS3 gives a new format to accellerate Blu-ray's penitration stage and make it mainstream as quick as posible. that why they include it with every PS3 to give insentive for people to use it. Even a low tech consumer will wonder "PS3 plays BLu-ray, which is suposed to look better than DVD, lets check it out".. Opposed to "My Xbox 360 can already play DVDs, there is no reason for me to pay 200 to watch HD-DVD movies I already can watch on DVD. I'd rather get more games."

Default Format war over?

Warner has just been awarded a copyright for a DVD disc that will play on three different players. Blu-ray, HD and SD.
