You can get some things at a decent price but for the most part Future Shop is a rip off, $45. for some movies . They think we are all rich and don't think twice about plopping down our hard earned money.

absolutely agree. We are supposed to feel special with their 2 for 50 special ? a simple stroll to amazon.com or any other website online or even some retailers makes you cry.

FS should make it 3 for 50 !!!

A little too late. This announcement means nothing. Of course they are exiting the HD-DVD market, welcome to March of 2008, since Toshiba won't even be making HD-DVD anymore, did they really have a choice?

It is like a few weeks after Halloween and a certain store start announcing that they won't be selling anymore Halloween costumes for the rest of the year.

When I was at Futureshop in Canada over the Christmas holidays, they looked like HD-DVD exclusive at the time, with couches and so on set up for HD-DVD displays. Blu-Ray was secondary.

Haha, Future Shop is the worst thing to happen to electronics in Canada Ever.
You don't get deals, you get crap service, a warranty that does nothing, and their Entertainment Section is Nothing special, short supplies of Movies and Music, and nothing not on the top 40s and the Most Popular movies. A&B sound is the way to Go.

Yup, Future Shop released this shocking news release 12 hours AFTER Toshiba pulled the plug on HD-DVD. What a trend setter.

Their stores also have signage over their BD sections as "Blu-Ray DVDs" Note the capitalized "R" and "DVD". When I pointed out that the sign should properly read "Blu-ray Discs) I was basically given the "so what" response. Service and respect for the customers is not exactly their strong suit.

Do you work at Future Shop?

The "so what" is a couple of things:

1. It's wrong. The capitalization and the phrase "DVD" means they are displaying official store signage for a trademarked item incorrectly. It's not up to Future Shop to change the name of a format.

2. DVD is a format, just like VHS. It's not a generic term to be used to refer to anything round, flat and shiny. Yes, I knew the difference, but the same consumers who might buy HD-DVD's thinking they'll play in their standard DVD player on their HD TV could easily think the same when something is called a "DVD".

It's not a point worth belabouring, nor did I make a big deal out of it when I mentioned it to FS. I just felt a store that strives to be at the forefront of technology would at the very least, want to label its technology correctly. I guess I was wrong.

Thanks for the concern Glenn-bob, but no worries, I don't dwell on stuff like that, I don't need to lighten up and my life's not stressful at all.

You're a real peach though. If you are looking for employment in the future, I would highly recommend FS. You already have the customer service training down pat.

Future shop is not the greatest, but they are good if you know how to use them right. I had them price match my Digital camera from a place online in canada and that was a good deal fro me. Then they matched a price for my 52" Samsung LCD which they had in stock and the other local place did not. So I do not like their customer then can be useful if you do the research up front.

Just my opinion.

relax man, yikes, haha. i have a "peachy" job and don't really have a need for a retail job. you are correct, my personality is not one that should be dealing with customers therefor I do not...and i don't feel the need to tell you what i do for a living if that is what you are after. Anyway, I'm sorry that i hurt your feelings by saying that your opinion does not matter. these guys are simply labeling stuff and if you knew you were looking at Blu-ray movies with the label they had then they have done their job. If a person is stupid enough to buy the Blu movie because it said DVD then that's their problem, not yours.

I tried to do some price matching and I was denied. WTF??? They told me it has to be a local retailer and the local retailer has to have it in stock fo rme to get the deal. Well if the local retailer had it in stock I would have gone there

I agree that if you do a little research you can get what you want from them (just don't expect useful advice from them)...

As far as buying Blu-ray discs from them, well they don't have really good deals but they are not the worst (HMV is usually pretty bad so far for Blu). I often buy my movies on release date from them because it is one of the only place where they get most of the new release (I say most because it's not always the case). Everytime I go to Wallmart, I only find a small section of Blu-rays, no new release and the section is really a mess!

Yeah I know that I can order from amazon but the shipping is killing it and I buy titles on release to get them on release (not 2-3 weeks later). But I do buy from amazon when a title is not available in Canada (I had a hard time finding Mr Brooks) and when they have special BOGO sales...

If you know a better B&M store in Canada to buy Blu-rays, let me know!

Yeah sometimes you get an overzealous employee who checks store stocks... But most of the time, they don't really complain.

I told my brother that they were doing a 3 hour sales on his TV at Bestbuy (he bought it the week before at FS) and they matched the price and he got like 150$ back, not too bad!

Another time on a dvd burner that I bought with the psp (their extended warranty), the price dropped and they matched the new price but since the price was now lower the price of the psp was also lower. They didn't want to drop the psp price at first but I just told them: ok them I am returning it and I'm gonna buy it back at the new price... So after telling them that they gave me the money difference back.

The name "FutureShop" is what's upsetting to some people like us in these forums who are rather tech-savvy and have expectations.

Jokes aside, the name "CurrentShop" would be much more accurate. This is how I look at it and why I love FutureShop, otherwise I would have been just as disappointed as several in this thread.

FS is a fabulous store when you want something commonplace or current - something that is Top 40 in music, Top Seller on disc and most sold in electronics and games today, etc. The deals ring true here. Ever been there on Boxing Day? December 26th is a special day for me as I load my car every year with purchased goodies from FS.

FS caters to Average Joe Consumer - who thinks he's tech savvy and will talk the talk at parties with his new gadget from there, but in reality, he's just part of the major wave.

But when you want something special, or rare, forget it. When you want something that really is "future" stuff, forget it. And don't expect any service from there either unless it's just ordering from some huge warehouse that already currently stocks millions of what you want.

In fact the name "CurrentShop" is also more accurate because of the other side of the timeline as well - good luck trying to find something that is "older" such as a part for a unit or a compatible device for so-and-so.

The FS model is designed for the masses, not the general hardcore or savvy tech-freak like you'd find in these forums. I do consider myself in-the-know when it comes to technology, especially in video, but I too want stuff that's in the masses as well, and that's what I use CurrentSh... err...FutureShop and expect from it, and that's why it doesn't disappoint me.

The Store is for the Common Idiot. That's exactly what my Manager said to me when I worked there. His EXACT words.

They don't have respect for the people that know more about the stuff than they do
