Default What is the best currently released Blu Ray Disc to feature Blu Ray Technology

I recently picked up a PS3 and trying to decide to keep it or not. I watched the talladega nights that came with it and see a small improvement over 480p, then rented Tears of the Sun (BR) and still a little better but not great.

Is there a movie out then can give me the shock I had when I first saw HDTV live football versus normal 480i? Please post movie recommendations.

Try MI3 or X-Men 3, both are great

^^ Both good titles.

There are many factors which can affect your viewing experience.

What kind of display and connections are you using? Having a properly calibrated display makes a big difference too.

Another thing to keep in mind, is that live broadcast HDTV like football is video-based content as opposed to movies which are film-based, so it's not really an apples-to-apples comparison.

If your looking to do a side-by-side, compare a standard DVD of the same film to the Blu-Ray version if you can. You should notice a siginificant difference.

Try Kingdom of Heaven. The best BD I have seen yet.

I have kingdom of heaven on it's way now from the online dvd store. I put all the highest bit movies on my list to see, even though I have seen them already.

I am running a PS3 with HDMI and optical audio to a DTS surround sound receiver and a Toshiba 57H84. A friend at work told me since my HDTV doesn't protect against HDCP then it could possibly be down converting it to 480p since my tv only support 1080i instead of 1080p. He suggested that I use the component video cable instead of HDMI since then I don't have to worry about HDCP. (I don't fully understand the HDCP part).

Thanks for yalls responses so far.

Have you tried setting manually the display resolution to 1080i in the PS3 menu options (before you play the movie)?

Yep confirmed 1080i was set after 1.30 update was installed. Thanks Petra, good list. The only debate on returning it is if it's worth the cost. I see blu-ray winning the format war, but still a risk of owning the beta max, plus as we saw when DVD players first came out they start at $1000 then in time they work there way down. Thinking if I should hold out for the $200 blu-ray player in 2 years.

Thanks again for the responses.

Funny thing about those tier lists. The person compiling it still went and told someone:

Rule 1: Don't touch Sony titles.
Rule 2: Go with my tier 1 titles.

You can use the least common denominator principle by testing both DVD and Blu-ray using a Standard Definition TV (or those that only have 480 resolution).

If you still have an old CRT, you can definitely do this.

If the same title(s) on Blu-ray gives better picture quality compared to DVD versions using the same SDTV, then there would be no compromises.

Only advantages

Regarding technically advanced title, so far I think that would go to:

From Hell (which is a movie by Fox)

50GB + MPEG-4 AVC + Commentary

I think

If you are more bothered by strange film-grain (and not so concerned with a super-sharp image), then a good 720p HDTV might soften up some of those artifacts, ...I think...

But that's like telling me to go listen to a harsh CD on the car while driving cus it'll sound ok there masked by the road noise!

I wanna watch BDs on a huge screen with all the film detail

The transfers should upgrade, not my equipment downgrade.
