Default Will Blu-ray now be the DVD Forum's "Official Successor" to DVD?

Now that Blu-ray has won, and HD DVD is all but dead and buried, will the DVD Forum actually change and declare Blu-ray as being the offical successor to DVD? Or are they forever going to cite a dead format as being the official successor to DVD?

Doubt it. They had their chance since Sony presented BD to the forum and they choose to go with Toshiba.

DVD-Forum didn't exist before DVDs and will probably die with DVDs. They aren't needed for BD since BDA was formed which is essentially the same thing except for BD.

The official successor is the "Blu-ray Disc Association".

Who cares?

Seriously, nobody anointed the "DVD Forum" king of media. It was only a talking point for the red to deceive people into believing Blu-ray is flawed and unworthy.

The DVD Forum handles the DVD format. The Blu-ray Disc Association handles the Blu-ray Disc format. That's the end of that.

Check out the DVD Forum's website, they still have a notice on their main page stating their outright rejection of the dvd+r format. There's not a chance in hell the DVD Forum will ever endorse Blu-ray.

I thought that couldn't be right, since they recently put their (outrageously belated) seal of approval on the plus formats. But, sure enough, this is right there on the front page ( http://dvdforum.org/forum.shtml ):

Quote:
Please note that the "+RW" format, also known as DVD+RW was neither developed nor approved by the DVD Forum. The approved recordable formats are DVD-R, DVD-RW and DVD-RAM.
I wonder if they will at least pull the HD DVD specs and remove their recommendation of HD DVD as the successor to DVD. Or are they going to live in a bubble where HD DVD is still viable?

I agree that the DvD Forum is for DvDs - what does it have to do with BD?

The unfortunate thing for the DvD Forum is that they won't accept "BD as the successor to DvD" for different reasons. People will just interpret it as "bitterness in defeat", but I think it's because they wouldn't accept BD because the BDA would have something to say about it, which would be more humilating even if it's an attempt to be professional about it on the part of the DvD Forum.

But I wouldn't be surprised if HD-DvD isn't dead yet with them... They may revive it, not as a "successor to DvD", but endorse it as a "successor to blank DvDs" - something they may attempt to sell as a huge and reliable disc storage format that is very cheap (compared to blank BDs)...

This is the important point, one that always seemed to fall on dead ears when it came to HD DVD fans. I'm not quite sure how the DVD forum became such a universal entity in their minds.

Because, at least from what I can tell, they did a good job with DVD. They seemed to unify the DVD standard and kept everything on track, at least for DVD movies (later with the writable formats there was that whole minus/plus thing, but that's another story). Note that this is strictly a surface assessment by a total outsider.

So in a way it would seem logical that they'd create (or anoint) a next-generation DVD format when the time came for high-def discs.

And, sure enough, they did. Unfortunately, they went for the Bad Guys: HD DVD.

It'll be interesting to see what they do now, but looking over their site I wouldn't be surprised if the answer was "nothing". Look at this page for an example of how fast they move:

http://dvdforum.org/hddvd-faq.htm

Yes, two clicks from their main page is their HD DVD FAQ. It consists of the message "coming soon" and is copyright 2004.

Suddenly it's not hard to see why the backing of the DVD Forum didn't propel HD DVD to success.

+1

Just like DVD's, the DVD Forum is slowly becoming obsolete.

Unfortunately for the admin staff gainfully employed by the DVD Forum is not likely to have to deal with BD.

If you look back at the VHS licensing body (what was that?), they didn't have DVD become the next VHS, the DVD Forum was created and the VHS licensing body eventually disappeared as an entity.

The same will probably happen to DVD Forum. It's the nature of old standards bodies to do this.

Of course not

Toshitba heads the DVD Forum so it's only going to continue to peddle DVD and now SUC

Aren't most of the members of the DVD Forum already in the BDA anyway ?

Founders:

Hitachi, Ltd. (?)
Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. Ltd. (Blu Ray)
Mitsubishi Electric Corporation (?)
Pioneer Electronic Corporation (Blu Ray)
Royal Philips Electronics N.V. (Blu Ray)
Sony Corporation (Blu Ray)
Thomson (HD DVD)
Time Warner Inc. (Blu Ray)
Toshiba Corporation (HD DVD)
Victor Company of Japan, Ltd. (JVC) (Blu Ray)

Imho the DVD forum is all but dead (as far as new formats go) now, it'll live on as long as the DVD format will be in use...

No. The official SUCcesser according to them will be upconverting and downloads.
