Default PS3 HDMI Question

I just purchased a PS3 and one big reason for getting it was to play Blue-ray movies. However I was a little concerned with this statement in the manual.

"Copyright-protected Blu-ray video discs can only be output at 1080p using an HDMI cable connected to a device that is compatible with the HDCP (Highbandwidth Digital Content Protection) standard."

I don't own a 1080p TV yet nor do I plan to buy one in the near future. I have two HD TV's, a year old Samsung LCD that has HDMI and an older Panasonic projection with component inputs. Will I be able to watch Blu-ray movies with the PS3 on either of these sets? I haven't opened it since I may decide to return it.

Thanks.

Don't worry about the HDCP for now, both HDTV sets should work fine with the bluray movies and your PS3. Go out and pick up some component cables and a good HDMI cable and your set.

Yes you will. Just not at 1080p

Supossedly, I've been told if a set has HDMI, it should have HDCP. But as your set is not 1080p from what I read in your post, it should in any case accept the 1080i output. There are various thread's with similar question around here, so you should look them up.
Your component inputs TV also can only get 1080i or lower so the 1080p through HDCP only part doesn't apply to it neither.

You should confirm this with the manufaturers or the stores, (Or wait for other more knowledgeable Consumer Electronics members pitch in.) do your HDTV's accept 1080i? (They should)
Or you can send me you PS3

Thanks a lot, that's what I wanted to hear! The statement in the manual isn't very clear in that you could assume that all Blu-ray content is output @1080p from the PS3. I can assume that the copy protection is only an in place when using 1080p.

I'm off to wrap the PS3 and place it under the tree. Thanks again!

The copyright protection is not in place yet. It will likely not be implemented until around 2010 at the earliest.
Then, without HDCP, you will only get a 480p signal.

This is not exactly correct.

HDCP is required on HDMI cables and is used by all HDMI devices. If a device outputs in HDMI format, it always uses HDCP which requires the receiving device to be HDCP enabled.

What you are talking about it the ICT (Image Constraint Token) which forces people to only use HDMI if they want HDTV from the PS3.

The two are not the same and shouldn't be confused with each other.

If your display has HDMI, then it MUST, by HDMI licensing regulations, have HDCP decryption on board.

If your display does not have HDMI, then you can use component video cables and get HD for the next few years without any issue for movie, and always for games.
