Unhappy Sony KDL XBR46" noise after turning TV off

Hi,

I just got my new Sony KDL XBR46" HDTV. Can someone out there who also own this exact TV please tell me if you experience the following problem:

After watching the TV for about an hour or more (so that the TV is warmed/heated up), if you turn the set off at this point, do you hear cracking noises from your TV set? The noise is similar to the cracking noise of having a piece of log burning in a fire place. This noise last about 1 min or so after the TV is turn off.

I am thinking this noise is due to heat build up on the TV and when the TV set is then turned off, the heat disapates and the components or cabinet just contract causing the cracking (tick, tick) noise.

Can someone who own this TV please try watching your TV for about an hour or more and let me know if the noise happens to your set when the TV is turned off?

thank you very much!

Wing Tang

Is your monitor getting hot? Is it enclosed?

Thanks Jason for your quick reply! My set is not enclosed and the ventilation is very good. My monitor is getting hot after more then 1 hour of watching TV. Also if the TV is cool and I just turn on and off the TV, I don't get this noise problem. Apparently, it is the heat that is causing this problem. Do you think you have this problem with your 40" Sony HTDV?

I have never had the problem with my TV, I assume if it is happening after extended periods it is a heat issue. Do you have excessive dust or anything that might be burning off?

I have the 52" and mine does the same thing. I'm assuming that it is just noise from cooling down - I've been monitoring it to see if it is happening less or more (had it for about a week). It's wall mounted with plenty of ventilation and it's a little cooler in that room than the rest of the house. I'm not sure that helps but, you're not alone.

Ive had mine since Oct or Nov. and i dont recall ever hearing that from my tv. But i do get a annoying humming from the tv after its been on for awhile. So since your tv is still new maybe it just has to be worn in a little.

My 46" XBR4 wallmounted makes cracking noises exactly as you describe, and often. I have wondered about why...but I decided it wasn't an issue as I've had the system since August and everything still works great! Also, of particular interest might be the fact that my new LG 24" LCD computer monitor does the same thing. Both of them crack at random times while on or just turned off.
