Question Replacing your existing DVD collection?

Hi all,

With all the movies being re-published in high definition, I am curious to know what is everybody's policy on buying blu-ray titles again for the ones you already owned on DVD?

I am doing the same, except for titles from certain studios since they continually give us inferior products than what BD can do (ie no lossless audio) - those I will not replace until they get it right.

im replacing only my must haves and a few other fun flicks. so things like irobot, fight club, koh, bhd, matrix trilogy, and quite a few other eye candy films get the BR treatment from me.

I'm replacing DVDs with high def media when they become available. I favor Blu-ray but willl replace SDs with HD DVDs when that's the only choice (Universal and some Warners)

I will only replace newer movies filmed in HD. Some realeses look only a tad better ( such as terminator 2).

No offense and I probably don't have room to talk - but its people like you that should be shot. Why would you buy BD and HD-DVD? Why would you keep both formats alive?

Jesus. I thought I was indecisive. Im not buying any right now but your buying both. Umm.. pick a side - ANY SIDE.

You buy Lp's Cd's too?

I am NOT replacing my 1000+ DvD collection with the Blu-Ray equivalents. My dvd upscaler does a great job, frankly; Kingdom of Heaven Director's Cut on DVD is quite good even compared to the same movie on Blu-Ray; What I may do is replace key titles with their HD counterparts, if they provide real value. All new titles I am buying or will buy in BR only.

DVD is a bit like the CD; CD's have been around for 2 decades now (think about that for a minute. 20 years) And I reckon DVD's still have life for at least 10 more years; after that, either Blu-ray hits off good, or everyone will move to digital downloads; there is the possibility of physical format to coexist with internet files, or streaming, a.k.a. AppleTV and similar products, which is what is going to happen, most likely, like today's coexistence of musical cd's and mp3's.

Well, I certainly don't buy much DVD anymore, but for some things I have no choice.

Anime, for example, is nowhere on the horizon, so I really have to buy if I want to see the newest releases.

Just really buying the blu-rays of movies I haven't bought the past few years. I'll replace only the ones that demand replacement, like Hero (if it ever comes out), or Goodfellas (this only because the copy I have is the original release that has to be flipped over midway through the movie). Other than that, I just don't have the money to update everything.

I'm currently buying the "Cool" New movies like Casino Royale, Dejavu, March of the Penguins etc and @ the same time replacing my ultimate favorites. If it's been over a year since I seen the film and only watched it once, it could stay DVD and not replaced.

I have sold 85% of DVDs to fund some BD's and other things.
I have kept some Universal titles and others I dont see being released on BD anytime soon!

As someone mentioned above it is fun starting a new collection!
Hard, not to be able to afford every title I want

If Blu-Ray becomes as popular as DVD, I see my collection being twice the size my DVD collection was (700+)

Nothing indecisive about getting higher quality when available. As I said, I prefer Blu-ray because IMHO it has greater potential, but HD DVD is unquestionably superior to SD so when a film I like is available only in that format, I don't hesitate to buy it. BTW I watch multiple HDTV channels, too, not just one. And yes, I converted most of my LPs to CDs long ago and to lossless digital formats since.

And I'm unclear for which of these actions I deserve to be shot...

My plan is to hold on to my DVD collection and start buying the newer movies on Blu-ray. I will also replace some deserving classics and personal favorites in my DVD collection to Blu-ray.

I do not have the urge to convert all of my DVDs to the next gen format. I'll keep everything as is and just continue. I think many years from now my collection of movies will show the natural progress of technology.

None of them. My apologies to you. Not sure why I flew off the handle there. Hope you accept it.
