Default Sony's proprietary speaker wire connectors

What do people do about these little problems? Someone asked me what they can do and I didn't know what to tell them.
Some Sony receivers come with these proprietary ends on the speaker cables to connect to the receiver. But if someone needs longer speaker wire, or wants to upgrade their wire, what are they supposed to do?

I told him he can probably cut off the ends of the supplied cables, and splice them to some longer, maybe thicker cables. Is that a bad idea?

My other question is, in doing this, is it reducing the impedance of the overall cable? Say the supplied Sony cable is 22AWG and I chop off the end and splice it to 16AWG cable. Will that help or hinder?

Thanks.

That's a good article for reference. Twist and tape works fine 99% of the time however. Most of those Sony connectors also have a small... lever? in the connector that allows you to plug in other speaker wire. You might take a closer look and see what will fit if you didn't want to splice, but there's no problem with it either way. Especially for the system you'll be using.

I know this is a bit after the fact, but here's what I'd do: I wouldn't have bought that receiver (or anything else with proprietory connections) in the first place!

Edit: Woohoo--800 posts!

^Don't worry I didn't buy it. I'd much rather keep my Onkyo .

Thanks that article helped a lot. I'll also let the friend know about maybe being able to replace the wires going into the connection.
