i believe the term you're looking for is royalities and he probably gets something for the number of movies sold. i'm sure it was worked into his contract before the movie was even shot.

I basically agree, but I don't think it goes by number sold, but by dollar figures, since profits is what it's all about..... since the movie will be rejuvenated when it hits the $5 bin (for DVD and Blu) and it stands to reason that "Big Willy" isn't making as much on the sale of it at $5, as he's making on the sale of it when people pay the $34.99 MSRP or whatever it is.

He'll get royalties for HBO, then when it hits TNT etc. and eventually when it's the "FOX sunday afternoon action movie" !!!!

Reminds me of the deal Jack Nicholson made for himself for Batman.

If I remember correctly, he took a smaller amount of pay for the film, but a larger part of the royalties for merchandising.

I think in movies/tv they call them residuals. A great way to clean up if you have a smart agent.

Nope... Actors are paid residuals for every disc sold, and for every time a film is shown on television.

Unfortunately, if SAG and the Studios don't get their act (no pun intended) together by the end of June, you going to know so much about what everyone is after, you'll want to throw up.

I have heard of many actors that take a back end of the profits for less up front money. I know Tom Cruise did this a lot, I read somewhere that he made like $150 million in back end deals on the Mission Impossible films.

I think the deal with Mission Impossible was that he was paid as a producer, but not as an actor. his $$ for acting was entirely tied to residuals... hence the rediculous sum.. IIRC of course...

They're called "points". 1-2 should be enough for a blockbuster.

Cruise OWNS the rights to the M:I series - both the original and TV remake AND the movies. He made them with some money from Paramount in return for their distribution deal and he makes money out of that too.

Actors and writers get residuals whenever the film is shown theatrically, on airplanes, on broadcast, released on DVD/BD/UMD, and on theatrical revival circuits/re-release. The same thing is true of their work on TV series/mini-series. The more you work, the bigger your nest egg.

Singers and songwriters have the same deal, including when their original songs are sampled by other artistes.

I think by and large the pay check can be steadier in acting. I think it's safe to say though with Will Smith he can name his price for whatever he puts his name on.

That depends on whether they're doing a loss leader style tour. You'll find a great many artists make their living off of concerts. They're not the ones with the 50 computer controlled moving light,s the smoke machines and 3 story video screens either

Or they're the ones talented enough to charge $200 a ticket and get it

I typically prefer a concert where the band and the songs support the cost of entry, rather than a video screen or special effects.

Not to say that I didn't have a blast at Pink Floyd or Madonna....

I enjoy Aimee Mann, Tori Amos, Indigo Girls, and Guster even more.

Partially correct. It is different for each contract and each industry and sub-industry. I know a few actors who take little to nothing in payment for a film, but have a higher slice of royalties, DVD sales, etc. Tom Hanks was famous for doing this on Forest Gump due to their limited budget. (Good move for him!) Whereas I know others who like the big pay-day up front (so does their agent), and then they take very slim royalties (or in some cases, none) after the fact.

Then there's George Lucas, who is just a glutton on both sides.

Any performance-based career (music, movies, novels) has a lot of room for negotiation--much more so if you are established. I've been a ghostwriter on 11 books and usually always retain some form of post-publication rights. But the last one I did, I negotiated a slightly higher up-front fee and turned over my royalties because I was buying an investment property and preferred cash-in-hand.
