Default In Market for 50" Plasma: Considering TH-50PZ77U

http://www.amazon.com/Panasonic-TH-5...productDetails

I'm in the market for a new tv, and I am most likely going to purchase a 50" Plasma 1080p (maybe the 720p kuro if it dazzles me when I go to BB to compare) .I've been considering the Panasonic TH-50PZ77U heavily; please see above link that shows price at which I can get it at Amazon with free shipping.

Questions:

1. if anyone here owns this model, can you comment on it? how you like it, etc.?

2. if anyone else is experienced with panasonic plasmas, how would you feel this set differs from the other models? specifically how much different would it be from the new ones, i.e. would I really want to spend 400 more for the new one?

3. has anyone here bought a tv from amazon? I've only bought small items like games and movies, i'd assume their service is great for any product, but I just wanted to ask to make sure.

thanks in advance.

That or when they release the 8 series the bottom will drop out on these. I will look to pick a 7 series up then for a good price.

I have been comparing a lot of plasmas recently. I do not like the 77's much, but the new 85's and the 700/750's look great. I would also look at the 768p Pioneer Kuros if I were you.

Default Own one

I bought this exact TV March 10 for $1,677.00 from Frys.com with free shipping (but had to pay tax in Ohio) - they are now out of stock. I also own a 42" 1080i Hitachi Plasma.

I didn't think I had a budget for a 50" TV any better than 720p but then ran across this one. I read hundreds of good reviews with the only negatives being a few people who don't like the matte look of the antiglare coating (I was nervous about this because I like to sit close when playing games on the PS3), once the TV is on I can not even perceive the coating at all. Also saw a few complaints about the speakers but they are actually much better than the Hitachi I have. I use a surround sound for games/movies but the built-ins are just fine for regular TV.

I obviously haven't had it set up very long but with that I have no big complaints so far. A few things to consider: at 50 inches, standard definition stuff looks terrible (10 times worse than my 42") I mean really terrible. Even some of the HD channels from the cable company don't look all that great on such a big TV when it is just upconverted stuff. My only real complaint: there are so many freaking picture settings it's easy to make 1080p content from the PS3 (BD - Season 3 of Lost) look bad. I have to believe with so many positive reviews it's just a matter of finding the right settings.

For the price, you can't beat this TV but you can obvioulsy spend a bunch more on newer models or "better" features. I'd feel good about reccomending this TV for the price you are seeing on Amazon.

I just picked up a 7th gen 1080p Panny from Costco (on sale for $1099) -- a 42PZ700u.

I love it. Great display. I you can -- would look for the 1080p model. But if you can't afford it (it is over $2k for the 50" 700u model at Costco), the 768p looks really nice.

Don't get too hung up on the 1080p thing unless your viewing distance is really close.

I will be viewing from 7 feet. Most people say at that distance that you need 1080p, would you agree or disagree?

It is all relative to the size of the screen. There is a good chart around here or the PS3 boards for all sizes. I think for a 50" the distance is 10' or less. I probably do sit closer than that sometimes (Heavenly Sword) but I went with 1080p more for future-proofing and it was a steal.

and here it is:
