I bought this exact TV March 10 for $1,677.00 from Frys.com with free shipping (but had to pay tax in Ohio) - they are now out of stock. I also own a 42" 1080i Hitachi Plasma.
I didn't think I had a budget for a 50" TV any better than 720p but then ran across this one. I read hundreds of good reviews with the only negatives being a few people who don't like the matte look of the antiglare coating (I was nervous about this because I like to sit close when playing games on the PS3), once the TV is on I can not even perceive the coating at all. Also saw a few complaints about the speakers but they are actually much better than the Hitachi I have. I use a surround sound for games/movies but the built-ins are just fine for regular TV. I obviously haven't had it set up very long but with that I have no big complaints so far. A few things to consider: at 50 inches, standard definition stuff looks terrible (10 times worse than my 42") I mean really terrible. Even some of the HD channels from the cable company don't look all that great on such a big TV when it is just upconverted stuff. My only real complaint: there are so many freaking picture settings it's easy to make 1080p content from the PS3 (BD - Season 3 of Lost) look bad. I have to believe with so many positive reviews it's just a matter of finding the right settings. For the price, you can't beat this TV but you can obvioulsy spend a bunch more on newer models or "better" features. I'd feel good about reccomending this TV for the price you are seeing on Amazon. I just picked up a 7th gen 1080p Panny from Costco (on sale for $1099) -- a 42PZ700u.
I love it. Great display. I you can -- would look for the 1080p model. But if you can't afford it (it is over $2k for the 50" 700u model at Costco), the 768p looks really nice. Don't get too hung up on the 1080p thing unless your viewing distance is really close. |
