Default audio output sources

I recently read a review of a BD player (the Panasonic BD-30) where the guru claimed by using the digital audio output he got significantly better sound than using the HDMI's audio. Has anyone else made a similar test with similar results?

Hmmm...HDMI is a digital audio output. Do you mean analog output?

No, when I say digital audio out I am referring to an optical (Toslink) or coax cable connection.

Never seen anyone make such claim, any links so we can see more details on the source and equipment used?

Some people have said that with players that can both decode the audio codec internally or send it via bitstream to a receiver, that it sounds a little better via bitstream. Theoretically it should be equal but some have reported liking their receiver decoding it over the player. This could come into play for many on Dolby TrueHD tracks. The Panasonic BD-30 can do this.

Actually, I am gathering this data because I anticipate buying the Panasonic BD-50 when it becomes available the end of April. This unit decodes the audio internally which is useful for me because my receiver isn't new enough to have the new audio codecs built-in.
