Default No Country For Old Men compression problem...?

Has anyone else noticed the absolute horrible compression in 2 scenes of this movie?

From 18:25-18:35 when he's hiding under the car, you can clearly see some horrible compression artifacts in the darker are of the screen.

From 1:00:36-1:00:42 is the worst though. The black becomes a solid object as the camera panned upward.

Anyone else notice this?

Nope. Can't say that I have. The movie in my opinion is one of the best looking Blu-rays I own. Followed closely by 3:10 to Yuma.

That's weird because 3:10 To Yuma also suffers from compression issues.

I haven't watched that part of the movie yet but in the first few minutes there is truly horrible compression noise in some sky shots.

It might be display issues. What is your set-up?

Watched last night, didn't notice the issues you mention. I'll look closer next time. I need to watch it again, I kinda got a little lost at the ending (due to scenes being intertionally left out), which was unconventional but somewhat of a letdown at first. Great flick, though.

I just finished watching No Country and didn't notice anything, nor did I ever notice anything with 3:10 to Yuma either.

I had a couple of issues too in the really dark scenes. No part of this bluray wowed me visually to be honest. Color picture was all good and solid, but as far as being really HD, I wasn't impressed.

I am using a 60" SXRD (the A3000) and I tested it on my PS3 and my BDP-S1 (both via HDMI). Both have the same issues in the same spots. I do notice that if you don't have your TV's black levels properly calibrated, the compression artifacts can dissapear. But then the overall picture is too dark for my liking. And I think it's weird that it's only in those 2 spots.

I have the exact same display - ISF'd. I'm running a BD30 and will give it a look. Are you sure you aren't just seeng film grain? Film grain is usually finer looking and in patterns...more defined looking. Even hints of blue/green color in it sometimes. Compression grain/artifacting is usually more sparkly or blocky looking.

The black actually becomes a solid piece and as the camera moves up, you see the black stay the same and then change. I'd take a picture, but I don't think it'd turn out that well and you'd lose the effect it has. I think if the camera was perfectly still, I wouldn't have noticed it.

But since you have the same TV, I'll tell you that my brightness is set to 48, my contrast to 66 (I think 66, but I am not sure on that I'll have to check) and using the custom picture mode. I don't have any motion enhancers turned on or any black enhancers.

Nope, didn't see them at the cited time codes. Sounds like a display issue. Are you running your PS3 at RGB or YPrPb?

Y Pb/Cb Pr/Cr. But it did it on my BDP-S1 as well. And I don't think it's a display issue because this is the only movie I've noticed compression this terrible on (aside from Assassination of Jesse James). And it's only for the spots that I mentioned.

After doing some more testing, I found that at 18:22, there's actually still pixels above the trucks in the part of the screen that should be black. The pixels are darker than the rest of the screen around it.

I'm sorry... but didn't this get a 5/5 rating on this site? Shouldn't I want my movies to look the best they can? "It's still better than DVD"... Well so was HD DVD and I still complain about that. The point of this format wasn't to achieve a "still better than DVD" label, it was to create a copy identical to the master. I can't imagine the master suffering from compression like that.
