Well, if we assume 10 million PS3 and dedicated combined, that would be 3% or so

Well if someone had it that would be nice, but Wicky's apparently got the mathematics skills we needed.

Does anyone know percentage of households with dvd players <off to google>

Quote:
The research company's third-quarter technology report said 81 percent of U.S. households own a DVD player, while 79 percent own VCRs
article

AND THIS WAS DEC 2006!!!! I didn't realize people held on to VHS that long. DVD's are gonna still be here for a lot longer than that I bet

Assuming that there are 3 million PS3's (we are assuming all of them are used as Blu-Ray players) and 1 million Stand Alone Blu-Ray players and the population of the United States is 303 million people, you can do the math.

http://www.census.gov/main/www/popclock.html

4,0000,000 / 303,000,000 x 100 = 1.3%

There are approximately 115 million households in the United States.

4,000,000 / 115,000,000 x 100 = 3.5%

You can change the assumptions and do the math. It is a simple procedure.

With 4.5 million Blu-Ray players:
4,500,000 / 303,000,000 x 100 = 1.5%
4,500,000 / 115,000,000 x 100 = 3.9%

With 5 million Blu-Ray players:
5,000,000 / 303,000,000 x 100 = 1.7%
5,000,000 / 115,000,000 x 100 = 4.4%

This is probably the best you can do. I don't believe anybody can give you a more accurate answer.

Is this pretty close to a true assumption of the number of PS3s and standalones? There has to be someone who knows the number of sales, but I haven't been able to find it

wow, so you guys are telling me that with all the advertising, the recent win over hd-dvd, and basically full support of the format at this point, only 4.4 out of 100 households have one? I was looking to switch my videography business to HD w/ blu-ray this summer, now I'm a little more skeptical. Is this number expected to increase drastically in coming months?

definitely make the switch. IMHO you can always downgrade, but in five years when the number is 25% or more then you can always re-author discs. At this point in time there IMO no reason to create anything that is not capable of being HD. I've been wanting a camcorder for about two years, but we've known about 1080p so I haven't wanted to get one until I could get a good one. I'm gonna get the cnaon one coming out in april, and I don't even make movies.

But we have completely enter the high definition age, and if you disagree, Feb 12, 2009 for sure...So in short I think it is worth making the switch, unless it would set you back financially too much at this time.

I believe the numbers will increase significantly. According to Sim Exchange and NDP, the forecasts for PS3 in March and April 2008, are 326k and 377k. These figures are for the United States only. Who knows how many stand-alone Blu-Ray players will be sold? All manufacturers have announced new and better models. Hopefully, prices will come down.

While I fail to see the humor in that, yes the assumption that a videographer would own a camera is correct...

the big problem with this is we've had no data on standalone sales since Toshiba gave up.

Before they gave up, blu-ray standalones had sold 650,000 (this is an old number) units I belive, PS3 to date has sold about 4.25 million units. I think that it is very reasonable to say that by the end of March there will be 5.25 million blu-ray players in people's households. Given there are about 115 million households in Ameirca, that puts blu-ray adoption at about 4.6% adoption rate, which is in fact better than DVDs market penetration.

Keep in mind blu-ray prices are still pretty high, as the price decreases market penetration will increase at an exponential rate.

Sorry couldn't resist this.

Videography is lot more than owning a camera. It is a form of art. It involves discipline, management and technical skills in addition to an artistically creative mindset. A videographer may not necessarily own a camera. He/she may use rental equipment.

However, there are lot of cowboys out there who call themselves videographers once they own a camera.

Holding a camera will not transform you to a Spielberg.

I'm also adding Blu-ray to my services at the moment. I say definitely go ahead and do it, especially if wedding videography is one of your services. I expect to sell plenty of HD weddings to people that don't even own HDTVs, let alone Blu-ray players. The wedding video is something they'll want to watch in 30 years. If they can afford it, there's no reason to short-change their future selves by not getting at least one copy on Blu-ray.

Of course, we haven't started pushing it yet as I'm working the bugs out still. I'll get back to you once I've successfully authored a disc (I know I'll get shot for posting this here, but my life would've been a lot easier if HD-DVD had won.)

I expect this would be the case. IMO, we could make a rough estimate of blu-ray penetration based on HDTV sales, since there is no viable competitor to blu-ray in the HD space.

Once people purchase HDTVs they would start to see imperfections and limits of the DVD technology. Then the only choice they have (apart from broadcast, cable and downloads) is blu-ray. Looks like blu-ray is a real winner. Of course prices should be right for the masses for a large scale take-up.
