HELP: whats the difference between these two pioneers? - Blu-ray Forum

i think i may have found the difference...i think only the best buy one is native 1080p...is that right?

the futureshop one is 1365 X 768 whereas the other is 1920 X 1080

The first link is the link to the Pioneer 5080HD which is 720p and the one at best buy is the Pioneer 5010HD which is 1080p...

I had heard that the 5080HD is one of the best tvs out there now...Home Theater Magazine rated it higher then a hand full of 1080p tvs...and other people that I know have that said it has an amazing picture!!!

Yes, you are correct, thus the price difference.

Please listen to this bit of advice: If you can find the 720p pioneer (1365 X 768) at a great price then go for it! Contrary to how a lot of people feel on this forum, the diff. between 720p and 1080p just isn't enough to pay a huge price increase for 1080p. As long as your buying a great quality plasma like Pioneer.

OMG I thought I would never read this from someone other then me!!! And I second that you should get the 5080HD(720p)...so many people I know absolutely LOVE the tv and think the picture is just AWESOME!!!

You know a funny thing happened when I went to my local Best Buy's Magnolia store. They had the Sony XBR5 on display along with a Pioneer Elite Kuro. Supposedly the Kuro had been calibrated. I have to admit, the Sony blew me away but the Kuro left alot to be desired. The kuro did have standard cable displaying but still the picture looked like garbage. My crappy 32" Westinghouse HDTV looked better than the kuro with SDTV. So, would you all say Best Buy lied about it being calibrated or are my eyes just not used to a calibrated TV? My Westy is not calibrated, but it looks good to me. Not too dark, not too bright. Easy on the eyes with color temps etc.

Wouldn't the SDTV playing on the Kuro explain it? What was playing on the Sony?

I can't remember to be honest. I know the Kuro had a sports channel on. Right now I have my TV tuned into FSN right now. Standard cable, not the HD channel. And the colors, while they look a bit washed out, they still look like the appropriate colors. The Kuro looked heavily orange and muddy. Also, it didn't seem to have the brightness turned up. I felt like I had to be sitting in the best spot in the room to see it. And even head on to the TV, it wasn't a good picture.

The Sony might have been displaying an HD source, but the colors were spot on, (imo), for it not being calibrated. It might have been a bit "hot" but it was tolerable. I just couldn't believe that the kuro was calibrated. I imagine SDTV would look tolerable on that set.

Does kinda sound like it had been 'played' with, but maybe by someone that didn't know what they were doing. The only outstanding picture I've seen at a Best Buy thus far has been from their Blu-ray set ups.

I may go back and ask the sales guy to put on a Blu-ray with the Kuro. I want to see an even better picture than the Sony if possible.

But the Kuro I looked at was 1024 x 768.

Not to mention most store set ups aren't exactly optimal for deciding which model to pick out either.

my panasonic is 1024x768 and standard def ranges from terrible to tolerable, but i have never seen an HDTV that made SD look good, especially if there is HD content on the set beside it

But the question is, why would SDTV look worse on the Kuro than my Westy? Is it because someone outside of the Best Buy employees messed with the settings? Or was it never calibrated in the first place? Or, and I doubt this, is the Kuro just not a good tv, as far as SDTV is concerned?

My question goes out to Kuro owners or Kuro experts.

i'm no kuro expert, but there are lots of possible variables. was the SD content being stretched or zoomed? was the kuro connected with hdmi, component, composite, or maybe even RF coax? are you comparing a 42" kuro to a 32" westinghouse?.........could be a number of reasons

I believe the SD content was stretched. I have no idea how the Kuro was connected, but I can't imagine Best Buy would not use HDMI or component. I guess anything is possible. And yes, I am comparing the 42" kuro elite to a 32" Westinghouse.

I am going to try to go back to BB in a week or two and ask them to play a Blu-ray.

I certainly hope people are not making their buying decisions of the Kuro line by SD broadcasts at Bestbuy that was probably splitted 80 ways from here to China with other sets there. That's like not buying a Porsche because it didn't have enough cup holders.

That is not even a fair comparison btw the Kuro and XBR...SD looks bad on any tv and the only reason your 32" may look better is cause it is a lot smaller then the Kuro!!! If the Kuro and XBR had the same stuff on, the Kuro would just as good if not better then the XBR!!!
