Default whats the difference between pro-logic1 and prologic 2?

I have an older reciever, which is a yamaha and when i change the settings it comes up with an option for pro-logic I and pro-logic II. is there any difference between the two? and im guessing it's too old to play lossless audio and hd audio. any help will be well appriciated

You want to use Pro Logic II. Higher number = newer/better in this case.

A good explanation is here.

In a nutshell, Pro Logic I gives you 4.0 surround sound if you have a source that can give it a properly coded Pro Logic signal (which nobody really does anymore because the format is obsolete). Pro Logic II gives you 5.1 surround sound from any stereo signal.

Close but not quite... even the wikipedia article has errors if you compare it with Dolby's own materials which I've quoted below.

DPLII expands to full bandwidth channels so some receivers/processors can perform bass management and route the low frequencies to a sub to support small mains/surrounds but DPLII does not expand the matrixed signal to create a separate .1 subwoofer channel.

And while you can get an effect from "any" stereo signal, you need a properly encoded stereo signal to get predictable results.

Dolby ProLogic = Stereo-source to matrixed 4 channel
The foundation of the multichannel home theater experience. This technology decodes source audio encoded in two-channel Dolby® Surround (including videocassettes, DVDs and TV broadcasts) for four-channel (Left/Center/Right/Surround) playback. Found in : Home audio/video receivers.
Dolby ProLogic II = Stereo-source to matrixed 5 channel
Sophisticated, matrix decoding technology that expands any two-channel source audio, such as CDs and stereo-encoded videocassettes, video games and TV broadcasts, to a five-channel full bandwidth (range) playback (Left/Center/Right/Left surround/Right surround), resulting in a surround experience. Found in: Stereo broadcast programming in analog, digital cable, and direct broadcast satellite (DirecTV/Dish); game consoles (Nintendo/Sony); home audio-video receivers; car receivers; decoders; PCs and laptops.

Dolby ProLogic IIx = Stereo or 5.1 source to 6.1/7.1 channel
State-of-the-art matrix decoding technology that expands native two- and 5.1-channel source audio for 6.1- or 7.1-channel playback (Left/Center/Right/Left surround/Left Back/Right surround/Right Back/Low-Frequency Effects), resulting in a seamless, wraparound soundfield. Found in: Home audio/video receivers; select PCs and laptops; automotive decoders and processors.
