Default Subwoofer Hook up for polk audio HT system and Onkyo 805

Hi all,

I have got the following set up

Panasonic DMP BD 30 Blu ray
Sony 40 XBR4
Onkyo TX SR 805
Polk Audio RM 6880 Speaker system.

I am trying to hook up my subwoofer .The thing is I am finding two different set ups

The one recommended by polk is :
Connecting the L and R fronts from the receiver to the speaker level inputs into the powered sub and from the Speaker Level outputs from the powered Sub to the L and R speaker fronts.

The once recommended by Onkyo
Connect the Subwoofer preout from the receiver to the L and R RCA in to the powered sub( I guess by using the Y splitter Sub woofer cable).Which method is better?

Please clarify as I am a newbie

Thanks in Advance
Jingo

I have similar, but older, Polk speakers and an Onkyo 705. I hook it up the way Polk suggests. I've had it hooked up that way for 4-5 years now (different Onkyo receiver until recently). I really like the way it sounds, but I can't compare it to using a subwoofer cable because I've never had it hooked up that way.

Thanks Jim..Well guess i will do the Polk way.

Can you recommend how to do the cross over settings for the receiver and the subwoofer?( I mean the the settings in the back of the subwoofer and also the speaker settings) Or the Auto calibration is going to take care of everything?

I don't know all about the RM 6880, but does that have a PSW303, or PSW404?

Personally, I have my PSW404 set up using the LFE output from my receiver, and love the sound. My Onkyo has my L/C/R/S set for 80Hz on up, and sends 80Hz on down to the PSW404. With such a nice receiver as the 805, I don't understand hooking it up the Polk way.

Polk might be assuming that their crossover is of higher quality than most mainstream receivers, but I would be confident saying that Onkyo has very high quality electronics, especially compared to Polk.

Just my 2 cents. I would hook the L/C/R/S speakers to the receiver's applicable outputs, and connect the sub to the LFE output and set up the receiver to apply its crossover to it all.

Good luck, and enjoy your HT!

Thanks skull ! I will try the other method and see how it works..Well the RM 6880 is a package.its a 5.1 satelite system..it has a got a 10inch sub and you can refer the website for details. No it doesnt have the PSW303 or PSW404.

thanks again

Well, that just shows my lack of understanding on it. I must be thinking of another system that Polk used to offer or something.

Anyhoo... give it a shot and see what you think. One thing about it is that you can always revert back to the Polk method if you do not like the other.

Good luck!
