Default surround sound for ps3

i have a bit of a complicated question, i have a ps3, a low watt surround sound system and a very good surround sound system. i want to connect my ps3 to the good system but it doesn't have an optical cable it has a coaxial output. can i connect the ps3 to the low watt system (which has both a coaxial and optical output) with the optical and then that to the high watt system with the coax? and get surround sound?

ONly if you low watt surround system has outputs (digital or coax) it will then be used as a pre amp.

You can, but I recommend upgrading your "good" system instead. This is consuming wasted power and making a mess of your entertainment center.

Take the wasted power dollars and invest it in a new receiver that will use that power and ease the burden on your connection count.

For your setup you need to have an optical IN to your low watt system from the optical OUT on the PS3, then run the coax out of your low watt system into the good system. At this point you're passing the signal on to your high watt system with a sort of "pre amp" from your low watt system. Be careful with your volume knobs in that you don't inadvertantly add GAIN from your low watt system causing your good system to amplify the signal LOUDER because it will cause distortion and sound nasty.

Will it be surround? Yes. Is this method efficient? No, and shame on you!
