Default Independence Day 7.1 sound?

I just watched Independence Day (Blu-Ray). On the case it says 5.1 Master Audio, but when I play it, my receiver lights up all 7.1 speakers?

Is the case wrong, or is my receiver converting 5.1 to 7.1?

My copy is 5.1. It's the Japanese import that came out in January.

What receiver you're using? Mine only lights up the source. If the disc is 5.1, it will lights up 5.1, even though I'm using Dolby EX to matrix it to my 6.1 speaker setup.

I'm using Yamaha RX-V1800. I will test it with my ID4 when I get home tonight.

I've got a Yamaha RX-V3800. This is the first time that I've played a 5.1 movie and the receiver lights up all 7.1 speakers.

That's strange. I'll test it when I get home.

Mine does the same on the majority of my DTS HD MA 5.1 tracks and the 3800 (including the JPN ID4). Some people have emailed the various Yamaha's (DE, US) about this and awaiting to see if there is a problem and if it will be fixed. If I understand correctly(from the AVS thread about the 3800) it might be a glitch.

Basically, it is understanding the 5.1 source and playing it correctly. No sound will come from the extra 2 speakers.

You mean just like the PS3 when in the XMB right, when all 7.1 channels light up even when you're listening to 2-channel mp3? I hate that because I can't use PLIIx, need to turn off 5.1/7.1 PCM in the audio output settings everytime. I also hope Sony fix that through firmware update if it's possible.

OK, that means you won't be able to use PLIIx for the 2 surround back speakers if the source really is 5.1. That sucks.

Tall Dog, maybe you can set the HDMI to bitstream, the PS3 can't decode the DTS-HD MA internally anyway, just let the receiver to decode the DTS Core. See if 7.1 still lights up.

BTW, this happens only with V3800 right, not V1800?

I believe it affects both the 1800 and 3800. Basically, the opposite of the Denon players that would display DTS HD MA 5.1 for 7.1 even though the sound was working fine.

The PLIIx, or lack of, is one of the complaints.

Now I really have to go back and check. Thanks for the info.

I've got the Panny BD-30 and it's set on Bitstream. Like I said, this is the only movie I've noticed this on. Weird!!

You're using the BD30? I thought you used PS3. Sorry.

I've just tested ID4 using my PS3 and V1800. Only 5.1 channel lights up.

Cool, maybe I have the only 7.1 copy in existence?? Next time I watch it, I'll have to pay better attention as to if the sound is actually coming from the rear speakers, or if the receiver lights are giving a false reading. Thanks for taking the time to check your copy.

My BDP-S301 player which can't decode DTS 5.1 MA does bitsteam the core via HDMI to my HTR. I am currently playing Independence Day. My HTR is displaying DTS 5.1. I have it on auto detect which will show the source exactly as it is being received from the player. I am not using PLIIx, never bother with it. Your HTR however could be set to PLIIx or some other DPS processing scheme that your HTR has. Perhaps that's why you're getting 7.1 sound, but it's not true 7.1 sound. Your HTR is probably matrixing it.
