I have a PS3, an inexpensive Yahama home theater (5 speakers plus sub) and a HP projector.
My projector can do 1080i and has no HDMI. I am hooked up via component cables and the optical audio. I love the PS3 but between the yamaha and the PS3 I am slightly overwhelmed with amount of setting options. I understand the basic video options (ie 720, 1080i ) but there are more, and I have no clue about some of the audio formats. Is there a sticky post somewhere, or maybe someone would be willing to list the settings I should be most concerned about. My setup works and looks great but I am not sure if the sound is optimized. It does come out of all the speakers though. Sorry if I posted in wrong location. Mike |

Your audio receiver probably only accepts DTS and other basic 5.1 outputs.
If you are running through optical (TOSLINK) it will most likely limit itself to what your receiver will play, because it should decode most anything available. What model is your receiver? I have an older (2-3 years) Yamaha receiver and it's probably similar, it was able to decode anything I through at it over TOSLINK from the PS3. |

bd/dvd set to bitstream for optical. i have a 1080i set but i leave it on 720p. i suggest that setting if your equipment is 720p capable. as far as other settings, when playing a dvd/blu, hit the triangle on the ps3, on the upper left corner of the symbols, theres one for a/v settings. just play witht the other settings to what looks best for you. all others i leave on auto or off. just play with it

Thanks for the info guys. I will do the upgrade and check my settings although I am still lost. It doesn't take long to get behind the technology curve. I used to work at Radio Shack and was up on this stuff but it was 10 years ago and changes fast. The studying continues
