Default Gizmodo poll: Is Blu-Ray a Placeholder Format?

Gizmodo has come up with a poll, prompted by the THX guy interview: Is Blu-Ray a Placeholder Format?

Possible replies are:
Yes, it is a placeholder (currently at 47.4% with 1457 votes)
No, it will stick around for awhile (49.5% and 1524 votes)

Thumbs down Stupid Poll.

You could apply that logic to any technology which has come and gone. VHS was a place holder. Laserdisc was a place holder, and so on.

The question is absolutely stupid and the answers don't mean anything. Placeholder to what? Anything else is simply repackaged blu-ray at this point.

So tell me, why do people want ANOTHER format war which does NOT even play back DVD? Dual player? Then what is the point of flashcard?

Consumers are not waiting for flashcard. They were waiting for the disc format war to clear up and now it is clear. Only us forum fanatics even know flashcard is a possibility. The general public is ignorant of such things. So how are they waiting for it?

Of course it's a place holder...Everything is! At some point, every technology will be replaced with another one.

The question is not if, but when!

This article says that this "Laurie" person is a she.... which is it? Is Gizmodo assuming it is a she because its such a girlie name or was the first article posted incorrect? I hope its the Gizmodo assumption, then I would really laugh at this statement!

They might as well change the "Yes, it is a placeholder" response with "I'm a bitter HD-DVD fanboy".

Obviously that's true in the long term. But that's clearly not what Gizmodo means with this poll. Just look at the picture portraying the "get a brain morans" guy as a BD supporter.

If you vote "yes," you're agreeing with Gizmodo's pessimistic, anti-BD attitude. HD DVD didn't win, so they want BD to fail.

Does lend credence to the theory that MS was playing HD-DVD off against Blu-Ray trying to get both to fail so MS can step in with its download on demand scheme to take away more consumer dollars. An internet toll-booth.

Anything that keeps the beer dribbles off my centre table qualifies as a "placeholder". Currently HD DVD is the better format.

EVERYBODY with a brain knows that it was DVD that was a "place holder format" for Blu-Ray.

DVD came out the same year HDTV's did but was'nt High Definition. Anybody with common sense knew that a successor to DVD in High Def was coming sooner rather then later.

It take it they have NEVER said that Blu-ray won't beat DVD?

It smacks of another episode of:

"Red Ant Channel - Anything But Blu - In tonight's episode, the red ants try to push an idea even FARTHER away from viability than downloads."

It will be HVD and direct cerebral beaming in coming episodes.

They always are, it seems.

The scope of the comment being pushed amplifies its importance. I'm sure it was an offhand remark, originally. Not a white paper on the the future of home entertainment.

Still, when making bold statements, you need to point out the counterarguments to the obvious reactions.

The length of time it takes for HD movies to move on to the next generation format will be determined by the adoption of Blu-ray.

Fact is that if Blu takes off fast enough and the corporate world invests enough money into it, that in itself will delay any replacement of Blu-ray. The manufacturers, studios and so forth will not want a new medium introduced too soon once they are financially obligated to the format. They will want to continue because the longer the format exists, the more profitable it become for them. The cost in technology is in research and developement, next it is in the initiall set up of manufacturing. After that they just crank out little plastic discs and make a boat load of money.

Reasearch and Developement phase is over, manufacturing set up is still expanding. Profits will soon start to be seen and the sooner that happens the more likely it is that Blu sticks around.

The reason you can buy DVDs at $5 is because everyone involves is actually still profiting on it. The reason you see BD movies hitting the shelves at $29 and over is because everyone is still trying ot recoup thier investments.

So tell me this...
If you were a big player in the BD industry 5 years from now printing BD's for pennies on the dollar, selling them at retail prices of $15-$20 with profit margins of over 100% why would you support a new medium? You wouldn't! You would do everythign you could to stop a new medium, i.e. Flash drives.

Now with Blu gaining momentum quickly and being adopted by millions of households across the globe, the only thing that can end Blue-ray, would be a new technology such as an even higher resolution format.

To say that a different format, offering absolutely nothing new to the consumer would threaten Blu is rediculous.

Moving aside the industry players, consumers will never abandon an existing format (Blu) for a new one that offers nothing, but requires financial investments on their part.
