Me too. However, the poll is not going so well in Blu's favour.

Why? 50% already made the switch... I think that is good enough in favor at this time. 50% made it, 40% not yet and 10% is not familiar with Blu-Ray or other reason.
Best,

Probably depends mostly on what kind of TV people have. Those w/o a HD set probably don't feel the need for Blu yet.

50% pos. / 50% neg. is not too bad of a result. Social psychology is a reason many people go for a new format - when everyone else is doing it and the prices are good enough. Similar polls were there with VHS and DVD, with similar results as well.

This is not so bad for Blu as most people still have a stranded def TV. Now that the TV's have come down in price, most people will buy them when they have the money or the old one breaks. That is when Blu will knock SDVD into the museums. People in ten years will look at SDVD like we do VHS now. Fondly but a little crappy.

Folks should also be aware that gizmodo isn't the site with the folks who're the ones we need to worry about. Gizmodo readers are going to be made up largely of people already set in their ways. It's going to be:

#1: People who don't give a crap about the media industry and just illegally download everything. These people will say "downloads are the future" over and over, even though they'd never buy anything over a download, even though they probably don't know anyone who ever has paid for something they've downloaded. These are the type of people who will laugh at you in the face if you tell them you just bought a new movie or album.
#2: People in the Blu-ray camp, who are fans already. They'll proclaim the basic tenants that we all know, most people prefer physical media, pricing is getting better everyday, and my favorite, nothing can match BD in quality.
#3: Bitter HD DVD dudes who are just interested in seeing Blu-ray fail by any means necessary. In their bitterness, they'll back anything that isn't Blu-ray, even if it's impractical or has no interest in the general population.
#4: People who don't care and don't pay attention to anything. They're likely to honestly believe that downloads will work for movies, just because they've seen how large of the market share Apple has pushed into MP3. But that doesn't really matter because the fact that they don't care means that even if Blu-ray overtook DVD, they still wouldn't care.

But none of these people are the ones who will make or break the format. It's the general population. As it is, the home video market is propped up by DVD, making somewhere between 80%~90% of software marketshare. Remember this, because it's important. How many DVDs do you think these sorts of people buy? The illegal downloaders, the HD-DVD fanboys, the people who don't care. You think they make up the majority of DVD sales?

No. So they don't matter. Screw em. We don't need them on board Blu-ray, because as it stands, they're not even on board the dominate media on the market. DVD sells plenty without the likes of mass-torrenters, so don't mind them.

ps this poll seems to allow you to vote multiple times. Don't be surprised if people on both sides skew results.

Yeah, those results are actually not too bad. A large percentage of people already switched, and a good percentage are making the switch.

I'd be interested in seeing what percentage of the people who responded that they are happy with DVD currently own HD television sets.

As they convert to HD sets, the number of folks satisfied with DVD will drop and blu-ray interest will rise. It's only a matter of time before everyone (even grandma) is HD. Do they even sell standard def sets anymore?

Best,
You are probably correct. I was just thinking that after 3 years Blu-ray would have more support. Perhaps that is wishful thinking on my part or maybe it has enough support at this stage. I guess I do not really know.

I might be an extreme case too. I started purchasing Blu-ray stuff after only a few months of sitting on the sidelines. I have also sold off most of my DVD collection. I can't remember the last time I actually watched a DVD.

I honestly see blu-ray as being a viable format only for the past year or so, since the war ended. Yes, technically it's been on the market for nearly three years, but the real beginning of the format was when it became the clear winner.

For being a little over a year old (using my starting point), those numbers are pretty good.

Actually, only 40% satisfaction with DVD and VOD is very low at this point. I wouldn't be thrilled by that number if I'm trying to build a SD PPV/VOD/download service.

I would think it is below the number of people without decent sized DTV (that is, I don't think 60% have a DTV sufficient for Blu-ray to shine). So, even those without a decent size DTV on which Blu-ray would shine would seem to have adopted or are interested.

Gizmodo is on same blog network as Kotaku, so I'm confident most of its readership is comprised of morons.
