Default Why all the bad movies

I see a trend that studios are releasing bad movies on Blu Ray, why?

Flightplan 37%
Pearl Harbor 25%
Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow 73 (critics loved it, I think it was pretty bad)
The Transporter It was OK, but old and not that good.
Ultraviolet 8% Some cool action, but not enough to save the movie.
S.W.A.T. 51%
Sahara 37%
50 First Dates huh? I am not a big Adam Sandler Fan, but this isn't even saved by action scenes.
The Descent Horror isn't my thing.
Scooby-Doo 27%
American Psycho 65% Not bad for a slasher film, but to be rushed to Blu Ray?

And the list goes on and on. Are they thinking that people will be so desperate for Blu Ray that they'll buy the crap before the good stuff comes out?

Meanwhile we wait for Lord of the Rings, Chronicles, etc.

unfortunately there is usually only 2 maybe 3 hits a year. they need to sprinkle these out over a long time to keep interest in the format, and give the crappier movies a chance is all I can think.

I would guess that the studios don't want to release their flagship titles until the installed base grows to a size where they would sell well. Until then, they're putting out their second rate stuff. It sucks, because Universal is putting out a lot of their big titles for HD-DVD. You would at least think Sony would put out their big hits on BD. We'll see what happens next year I guess.

You're not serious are you? You base how much you enjoy movies on RT?
Speed 93%
Dances with Wolves 82%
I liked Speed, but no way was it better than Wolves.
If the list goes on and on why don't you list ALL of the titles? Compare the RT rankings on all the HD DVD released movies with all the titles on Blu-ray and then make your decision on which format to support based on that rather than on what the future holds.

Actually I think RT's ratings are a little high for Dances, I liked Speed a lot better. RT's ratings are based on the reviews of the movies, so Speed had more positive reviews then Dances. When I am interested in a movie, I look at what the reviews are saying, and then I make a decision.

I only pointed out a few movies, as those are the ones that I am seeing in the stores. There are more that I think blow, but I've made my point, why point out every sucky movie being put on Blu Ray?

Why is so much crap getting shoved out to the market on Blu ray?

Some, like Ultraviolet and Stealth while bad movies might get snatched up as it's action will show off a great HD T.V. and sound system. Wouldn't you rather have Star Wars IV,V and VI for that instead?

And Star Wars IV, V and VI didn't show up on DVD until seven years into the format. You expect them to be released 6 months into Blu-Ray?

Seeing they just did a major re-release after Blu Ray was out, yes. I hope they are planning some special content to add and that is why it's delayed.

Also, I didn't pick up any of the new release as I am waiting for the Blu Ray versions.

There are people who are going to buy them, but what do you think would sell more, American Psycho or Psycho on Blu Ray? LOTR or Am. Psycho? Narnia or Am. Psycho?

It's a lesser liked title then many other films.

There's crap on every format, from VHS to DVD, from HD DVD to Blu-ray and from cinema to cinema.
Why would Blu-ray be the first format in history to selectively only put out what you think are good movies?
Sure I'd love to have the Star Wars trilogy and it would end the format war in it's tracks, but there are lots of current BD movies I can see in the stores that I'll be buying and lots coming up too.

I'd buy American Psycho over Psycho any day of the week. Narnia? Not so hot. The animated version was better. American Psycho again.
LOTR vs. American Psycho? Duh! LOTR of course. That's the extreme upper echelon of HD titles.

I think classic Star Wars will get released year by year starting with 2007 to coincide with the RealD Imax 3D version.

That's because G. Lucas is a greedy bastid. And no, I don't expect him to be any different now.

Why are there so many crappy titles released on DVD? Crappy titles exist - that's a fact of life, especially when the Hollywood studios like to pump out the same, formulaic crap year in and year out. Why are there more of these titles on Blu-ray compared to HD-DVD? Because Blu-ray got more studio support. Otherwise, you'd be seeing the exact same thing on HD-DVD. We all want the big blockbuster movies to come out in HD, but that will take time to do. First, many studios may not yet be convinced if either of the HD formats would take off anyway, so they're a bit hesitant to invest significantly in them. Second, and probably most importantly, if they do decide to release something big like Starwars, LoTR, or Pirates, they need to make sure the release is absolutely flawless. Otherwise, it might have the adverse effect, and drive people away from the format. Imagine if Spiderman came out at Blu-ray's launch, complete with the issues that plagued the format's early releases. There would have been no recovering from that. I'm sure all studios know this, and that's why they're taking their time with their big titles.

You see the crap on DvD and VHS as that was the standard media that was out there when that crap was put out to the markets. I see studios going out and digging crap out of their catalogs and putting that out on Blu Ray. The question is why? Why avoid A list movies to put B list movies out?

I'm not talking about what I think are good movies, plenty of critics have slammed these titles. I think Titanic blows chunks, but I am surprised that has not been announced (to my knowledge) for Blu Ray or HD DVD. It's about market size, more people would be buying movies like Titanic on Blu Ray then American Psycho.

Your point is asinine.

So, the theory is for Blu-ray to wait and see what happens before releasing great titles? Meanwhile Universal Studios is putting out great HD DVD releases. That makes NO sense. If Blu-ray based studios would put out better content out the gate, consumers would adopt it much quicker. I am a Blu-ray supporter, so I'm only stating on observation here.

Since the title is regarding bad movies, let me take a quick moment to bash the Sopranos Season Six. (Not on BD but in general)... that show really slipped the past few seasons. I rented S6 only out of morbid curiosity. WEAK!!!

Anyway, I think Blu-ray needs to put out (had to pause and laugh "put out") some blockbuster titles and let's crush HD DVD earlier, rather than later !!!

Go Blu !

Well, what happens when they put out a cherished title, and the quality isn't spectacular?

What about when a new release is basic, with no extras?

It's not as if people are being totally reasonable here. All they are demanding is large numbers of their all time favorite titles be released in pristine quality, HD audio, with lots of extras, last week.

"I don't care about X" will always have someone disagree, and say that X is important (for any X). So, they are damned if they do and damned if they don't. And everyone is left p!ssed off at the studios.

The B titles give them a chance of perfecting the workflow, and getting content out that people will forgive not being totally mindblowing, while they restoring prints, create HD audio masters, and produce the special extras the classic films demand.

Some would say Universal had no choice. HD DVD would have no chance at all without Universal stepping up. They've been a vocal opponent of BD, so they better put up or shut up when it comes to movies, right?

I would think people should wait for the CES announcements before passing judgement. There was little market for BD discs until the PS/3 was released. Now, the studios have a market to produce for.

Why? It proves my point. Titanic is the highest grossing film of all time (b.t.w. that doesn't make it a good film.) why isn't there a HD version of it?
