Default Uncompressed

Is uncompressed sound supposed to be better sounding than just standard 5.1? For some reason it sounds much better as 5.1. Is this because of my surround sound system?

its suppose to sound better.

But if you do not have the right equipment it will not. You have to use either an HDMI or Multichannel Analog setup.

If you are using optical or digital coaxial, it will not sound right.

Optical is only capable of 2.0 Uncompressed. That is why it will not sound right...its stereo left/right channel.

You need HDMI or Multichannel Analog for true 5.1-7.1 Uncompressed audio.

I hate uncompressed PCM isn't the audio track set by default on the disc. Same thing with Dolby TrueHD.

Any reason for this?

Default Listening to uncompressed 5.1 PCM tracks on blu ray discs

When watching Blu Ray discs that have uncompressed 5.1 PCM soundtracks, most of the time I can either not tell the difference between the PCM track and the Dolby Digital track or the DD track sounds much better. Examples of movies are Crimson Tide, The Queen, Black Hawk Down, and Pirates of the Caribbean. I have searched the Internet, called Panasonic's customer service dept. (when I used to have a BD30 player) and asked several persons at my local Best Buy and have not received any answers that have worked. In fact most people either don't know what I'm talking about or have the same problem and don't know how to fix it. I have no trouble making the Dolby True HD and DTS HD-MA tracks to work and show up on my Onkyo receiver as being decoded properly. The PCM tracks display on my Onkyo as "Multchannel PCM," but they sound dull and lifeless compared to the DD track.

Here's my set up all connected with HDMI 1.3a certified cables.

Samsung BD-P1400 (all audio is set to Bitstream)
Onkyo TX-SR605 (all audio is set to "direct" mode)
Pioneer 5010-FD Plasma
Monoprice 4X1 Enhanced 1.3b Certified HDMI Switcher

I've tried connecting the HDMI cables directly from the BD player to my receiver and there is no change. I would appreciate any suggestions!!!

I tried switching my Onkyo TX-SR605's audio settings from direct mode to multichannel mode and it doesn't change the quality of the sound on the uncompressed PCM tracks.

If you can't tell the difference, then too bad.

Mathematically using the same audio stem tracks, lossy compressed audio like DD and DTS will NEVER sound better than Uncompressed PCM, Dolby TrueHD or DTS HDMA because DD and DTS throws away audio info just like MP3 does. So if you really can't tell the difference and your audio equipment is not at fault, too bad.
