Default Sony Survey: Why do you hack?

http://www.qj.net/Survey-for-Dark-Al.../49/aid/117825

Quote:
Really, how would Dark AleX respond? Sony Computer Entertainment has just released a survey asking the PlayStation Portable community why they hack their handhelds. Click on the image above for a higher resolution of the Sony survey.

Sony has not released details about the research, only saying that it is one of the company's efforts to understand its consumers. But with the boom of the PSP homebrew scene spurred by NEM and the Saturn Expedition Committee, the Spanish Swaploit team, Killer-X, Fanjita, Noobz, and sustained by Dark AleX among many other devs, it seems Sony is trying its best to keep up.

Releasing firmware after firmware (with the latest being PSP Firmware 3.95) may be taking its toll on Sony engineers. Since Sony is protecting the PlayStation Portable from a faceless homebrew community, the very least they can do is know their reasons why they hack the PSP in the first place.

Who knows, this might just lead into a dialogue between Sony and the homebrew community. Now, if you're into the homebrew scene, how will you answer the survey?
pic of the survey in the link. thought it was hilarious.

Um, cuz psp games albeit two of them completely suck.

Id rather play video games from snes than the actual psp games.. and its free.

Plus psp games suck

did i mention psp games suck?

Maybe people wouldnt hack the psp so much if they put out decent quality games once a damn year.

I am not a hacker but I think some the home brews out there are pretty cool and could spur proprietary devolopment psp as universal remote seems pretty cool to me for example.

Older psp, the non slim ones, are much easier to hack.

By hack we mean get custom firmware, and be able to emulate games, such as Chrono Trigger, FF7, etc.

Not literally hack into other people's psps.

About a year ago I bought a second PSP on which to instal custom FW. This was for one reason only: to play back mp4s at 480x272 res which feature somebody had hacked open. At that time Sony had restricted mp4 playback to 320x240. I thought this was stupid and was prepared to give them an extra hardware sale to get the functionality I wanted.

Several weeks later Sony relented and changed their FW to allow mp4 support up to 720x480. Turns out that the hacked PSP is still slightly better than the original -- backlight goes a notch brighter, can disable the startup loading screen, above all boost CPU speed so that select titles (e.g. Wipeout Pure, Medal of Honor Heroes) run more smoothly.

don't have a PSP yet but the biggest reason i want one is to be able to take all my favourite PS1 games on trips. i don't think i should be required to purchase a game i already own (in canada i believe it's legal to download content you already own even if it's a different format) and i sure don't want to wait forever for my favourite PS1 games to show up on PSN either. this is why i will look into custom firmware when i do get a PSP.
if PS1-PSP games were free for people who already own them then i would have no interest in 'hacking' anything. this would be easy to do: just insert your original PS1 discs into the PS3 so that it recognizes you already own it thus making it free for you in the PSN store.

well i think it's a good idea, but it'll never happen

I have no need for a homebrew, nor are any of mine hacked.
I think with all the "bricked" psps, Sony wants some idea of maybe what content they have overlooked and capitalize on it thus eliminated the service and returns for hacks gone bad

Actually, the homebrew community can UNbrick your system. I've done it personally. I don't condone the act of hacking games in the sense of copying them, but I am 100% pro-modding. If you play a downloaded PSP game, you are a jerk. If you play a downloaded SNES game then...you know, whatever. That's fine. It's not like you can really go out and buy them.
I also use my PSP to view Acrobat files, and as mentioned before, being able to upclock the CPU/FSB makes your legally bought games run smoother.
I hate when people try to lump what evils you CAN do in with what harmless fun you can have. Guns are a lot of fun when taken to the range, but since they CAN be used to shoot people what, do we lose guns? It's dumb.
I love my PSP since it has some great games. Valkyrie Profile, Jeanne D'Arc, Final Fantasy Tactics, Wipeout Pure/Pulse, Crisis Core, Brave Story...all really good games. The new cutscenes in FFT were so amazingly well-done it justified the replay. Plus, the new translations were extremely well-written.
So yeah. Vote yes on homebrew, vote no on illegally obtaining games.

I think it's because, frankly, the games cost too much at retail for a portable format. They should be $19.99 and under, imho. But, that's just me.

95% of the PSP games I've come across are bad... Really bad. I have about half a dozen games I think I put in the thing maybe once and was pissed at how much I had to pay for them (most are higher rated psp titles even). The quality just does not justify the price.

I'd homebrew if I was younger and not as financially stable just so I could 'try before I buy'. I've wasted WAY too much money on titles that suck... That is a 100% certainty.

So far, Hot Shots Golf and Crisis Core are the only two games I have that I feel have been truly worth it. Even Monster Hunter 2 was over priced for what it is as was God of War (looks good, plays fine, but is too basic hack and slash). In fact, I would say that so far out of all the PSP titles I have played, Crisis Core is probably the only one that has come close to my expectations for a title being $39.99 (I got HotShotsGolf for $10 in a bin somewhere and it blows away my $40 Monster Hunter 2 in playability).

I agree with other posters also that things like restricted video support would make me homebrew in a heartbeat. It's ridiculous that anything the PSP can do would be purposefully hindered. It just makes no sense at all. They really need to just open the damn thing up to it's fullest potential as well as include legit copies of movies on the Blu-ray or DVD that can be moved from the PS3 (or PC) to your psp and viewed. That really needs to be included in any video purchase at this point.

I don't have the time to devote to homebrew (and don't want to buy a backup PSP either just for it) so I don't do it. But, I certainly respect anyone who does and their wishes because I can fully understand why the do it. If Sony doesn't understand, they need to, pardon my French, 'wake the f**k up'. Seriously. It's pretty damn obvious.
