Blu ray and sony receiver help?

Last week we bought a sony bravia w series 52" lcd set, we also bought the blu ray player sony Sony BDP-S300, along with the home theather sony Sony DAV-HDX500.

Couple of questions....

The tv has 3 hdmi inputs and are used as followes.

1. Direct tv hdmi to tv

2. Blu ray to tv


now we have the blu ray plugged into the tv hdmi , and using 1 rca red/white cable to the back of the blu ray output we connected to the input of the receiver home theather. While we get ok sound, we are not getting 5.1 surrond how we want the blu rays to sound awsome and in full glory, what can we do??

could i conenct an optical cable from the out of the blu ray into the in of the receiver and get 5.1 surrond sound?
