Default Sony Receiver

I am in the market for a $300 - $500 receiver. I was narrowed down to the Onkyo 605 and the Yamaha V663, then I saw these prices on the new Sony 820 and 920. Through my corporate rep I can probably get them discounted even cheaper. What do you think? That 920 is looking pretty sexy....

I was in the market for a receiver in the same price range for another receiver, and since I was using the PS3, I settled on a Refurbed Marantz 5001 for $350.00

I love the sound quality of them. There is a denon someone has a thread about, that he raves about, but I haven't heard that particular one.

That is a good price, I was really wanting something that decodes the new audio codecs in that price range though. Those prices on the Sony's are at least a hundred dollars cheaper than other places I have seen them.

The 820 doesn't do the new codecs and the 920...You still end up with Sony (non ES) sound. Reguardless of your discount I would stick to the Yamaha V-663, its more flexible than all of them (only draw back is only 2 hdmi inputs).

Yes the 820 does decode new codecs, look at the right corner of the front panel. Dolby TruHD and DTS HD MA it's right there.

Indeed I have hard facts now Unless Sony missed putting some of its features in the specs department or its clearly a misrepresentation (but its not a misrepresentation - it will pass a converted LPCM TrueHD or DTS HD MA signal as LPCM...when decoded by the player)!

I was reading from his link http://www.cdw.com/shop/products/spe...ecs-_-Main+Tab - it didn't mention it so I believed them. I stand corrected , but my other comments about Sony remain the same - no change there

What you got against Sony? Just kidding, everybody has a right to their own opinion, even if it's wrong. Typically it's mine that's wrong, but oh well. My Sony gear works fine for me.

I like Sony, as long as its ES, they put their quality into the ES products. I own several Sony ES amps and a reference ES CD changer. Their mass products are usually not up to par.

I'm also a big Sony fan (see sig). However, I do stick to the ES line, and after upgrading my Sony Receiver for an Onkyo (Onkyo was ahead of the HD audio curve), I couldn't believe how much better it sounded. They may be ugly, but my Onkyo's sound is very satisfying. At the end of day, I listen to my receiver a whole lot more than I look at it.

Is this deception on Sony's part - I smell a rat afoot! I went to Sonystyle and pulled it up and sure enough - although it says it on the front - it doesn't include it in the decodiing features:
http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs/...4791&langId=-1 look under the specs tab!

Sony is saying if you have something like the PS3 it will do all of these or if you have another BD that does the decoding - that's just lame, lame, lame!!!!
Or do I owe Sony an apology for not writing up their products properly?
