These statements that I'm making are as per the specifications. In the descriptions the 820 and 920 state that they can decode the "latest audio formats from Dolby® Labs and DTS®" but when you get to the specs - unmentioned but in the ES product line it's clearly stated that it decodes TrueHD and DTS HD Master. Hmmmm again

That CDW link I posted says the 920 decodes the formats, but doesn't say anything about the 820 doing it. But, if you look at sonystyle.com it says both decode the formats....

An there it only states it in the write up, in the specifications part - no mention of TrueHD or DTS HD let alone DTS HD Master.

I would go with the Yamaha or the Onkyo at this point. I can't trust the Sony at this time...Sounds too much like polititians - They make promisies and only deliver on some of them.

I'm also a big Sony fan (see sig). However, I do stick to the ES line, and after upgrading my Sony Receiver for an Onkyo (Onkyo was ahead of the HD audio curve), I couldn't believe how much better it sounded. They may be ugly, but my Onkyo's sound is very satisfying. At the end of day, I listen to my receiver a whole lot more than I look at it.

(Sony receivers can't make it past my bedroom - where I keep my upconverting DVD - translate = HD-DVD) player !

I have the DG720, and one thing I learned when I was researching to buy mine was that the Sony website is notorious (much like Amazon with their region coding) about not putting information on there correctly. Typically, if the site says it will do something, it will. But, they do leave off specs quite frequently.

I would find it VERY hard to believe though, that the 820 has the logos for the codec on it, and it doesn't do it. I find that much more difficult to believe than just because the website doesn't say it, it must not do it...

That's just asking for trouble on their part...

Why don't you look up the manual on their website? That oughtta clear up any doubts you're still having...

http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/mod...?mdl=STR-DG820; check page 23.

Thanks Dutchboy.

The fact that I can probably get this on payroll deduction at 50 dollars a pay with 0 interest is a good incentive.

If you're not going to get the Sony, wait for the new Harman Kardon recievers. They will sound better than an equivalent Onkyo and HK's build quality makes the Onkyo look like garbage in comparison.

dont buy a sony receiver. They make great cameras, tvs, camcorders, etc.. not home theater. There power is garbage, onkyo, denon, marantz, yamaha, harmon, etc.. have clean power and give what they are speced at. Sony claims 110 watts of power, but only gives 30. I think I would rather 50 watts of clean undistorted power compared to 110 watts of garbage.

Test Bench: Sony STR-DG910 A/V Receiver

Output at clipping (1 kHz into 8/4 ohms)
1 channel driven: 84/138 watts (19.2/21.4 dBW)
5 channels driven (8 ohms): 30 watts (14.8 dBW)*
Distortion at 1 watt (THD+N, 1 kHz, 8 or 4 ohms): 0.02%
Noise level (A-weighted): -75.1 dB
Excess noise (with sine tone)
16-bit (EN16): 1.2 dB
Frequency response: 20 Hz to 20 kHz +0, -0.1 dB

I thought I was the only one that noticed this!

Sony is BAD about their info. For instance they list the 810 as 8 channel (7.1) PCM capable...it is only 5.1 PCM.

Yeah I can't get a straight answer as to what version HDMI the STR-DA3300ES is.. I contacted Sony and was told 1.2... But other review sites state that Sony published that it was 1.3...

Sony doesn't have any info whether or not the 820 or 920 decode DTS-HD or True-HD
