I think if they got the right actors. Probably some no names....And they used todays technology mixed with some old school stuff....The last star fighter would be cool if they re created it.

I remember reading somewhere that someone wanted to remake The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly. Which I think would be a horrible mistake.

I have the deal sealed on this topic...

THIS MUST NEVER HAPPEN!!!

If this comes to pass, I guarantee that movie title would become synonymous with both the best movie ever made AND the worst movie ever made.

She must be out of her mind.

Casablanca being one of my favorite movies of all time, this would be an insult to the original version.

I think the #1 movie that shouldn't have been remade is undoubtedly Psycho.

I think any movie is fair game for a remake if the creative team has a sincere belief they can bring something new and valuable to the table. Walt Disney wasn't the first to make films from Snow White and Peter Pan, but he knocked them both out of the park.

Chicago was a remake. The Lord of the Rings was a remake (even if Bakshi never finished his original film version of it). The Departed? Remake.

The rub, though, is that there are some movies where there isn't "something new and valuable" to bring to the table. How could one possibly improve Citizen Kane? What new could one bring to Forrest Gump (how could anyone replace Tom Hanks in that film)? I think in those situations, you're only setting yourself up for a disaster.

As to that Madonna in Casablanca story, the whole audience has to be in love with Elsa, or the story doesn't work. Rick is such a cynic, you have to have a woman at the center of it with such qualities that you believe his cynicism would eventually melt in her presence. I'd find it easier to believe Madonna playing Rick than I would Madonna playing Elsa. And yes, Madonna in Casablanca would be a disaster. You just can't replace or improve on that movie, so you shouldn't even try.

The list of movies one could create in which it seems impossible for anyone to replace or improve upon is actually a giant one. While the usual films such as
Casablanca, Citizen Kane, The Graduate, The Godfather / The Godfather II, The Exorcist, Bambi, Ben-Hur (1959), Lawrence of Arabia, etc. immediately come to mind, on further contemplation, so do quirky iconoclastic films like Pink Floyd the Wall, Night of the Hunter, American Graffitti, and Plan Nine From Outer Space.

Sure, you *could* remake those films, but why?

Films should be remade when there's a great premise/great story, but some elements didn't work (or the budget wasn't there to do justice to the film) and these factors weakend the overall product -- therefore, since you have the great story, you need to start over. It takes a remake to "fix" the film. Examples would be Disney's The Black Hole, or Spielberg's Hook.

I'm very interested to see how the new Tron and Short Circuit will translate into this technology age.

As for bad remakes the first one that came to mind off the top of my head was Planet of the Apes.
