Default "Technicolor Brings Image Enhancement Artistry to High-Def Encoding Work"

http://www.postproductionbuyersguide...n_04_10_08.php

Digital Vision, the premier supplier of picture enhancement systems for film and television post-production, announced that Los Angeles-based Technicolor Creative Services has purchased four DVNR 2k image processing systems for use in high-definition DVD compression and authoring work. The systems, equipped with AGR4 ME and ALS options, enable Technicolor to manage film grain and video noise and correct for the artifacting that often occurs when encoding images for high-resolution formats such as Blu-Ray.

Should I be happy about this?

That does not appear to be very reassuring.

Any rush to appease grain haters is something to be very concerned with.

There is detail in them grains.

Wasn't it Universal that was talking to Technicolor?

some grain is ok, but excessive grain takes away from the movie. I have a few movies that have this issue, some movies it's just a scene or 2, but ultimately I want to see the movies as best I can, and I don't see anything that grain adds to the movie...

EDIT: just to be clear I hate grain, but if removing the grain impacts the video quality that I too am opposed to this, if they can remove the grain without hurting quality, then I'm for it.

Some movies have deliberately excessive grain (e.g. 300, or Saving Private Ryan). It is INTENT.

And whether to remove it should be left to the director/DP. If they approve the removal, that would make a world of difference to the situation. But, just removing it because some people don't like it is the OAR argument all over again.

Film should never be made to look like anything but film. To make it look like video destroys the very nature of it being "film".

Film has a texture made of tiny grains of emulsion. That's what it IS. If people don't like grain in movies and can't handle that it's there, I suggest that they stick with a medium which is well-known for it's grain masking abilities.

It's called DVD.
