Default Why do some DTS-HD MA tracks sound better than the LPCM track?

Why do some DTS-HD MA tracks sound better than the LPCM track?
(on the same disc, obviously)

I did notice on these BR movies that the sound level is slightly higher
in the DTS-HD MA track, compared to the uncompressed LPCM track...

are those two supposed to be identical?

Thanks!

I have always felt that DTS offers the best dynamic range and really delivers the most outstandig bass than any other format. Now that DTS HDMA is out it has gotten even better. I can't wait for the Golden Compass to come out......DTS 7.1 HDMA!!

thanks! I didn't know Golden Compass was going to be DTS HD MA 7.1.....

my receiever is capable of is 7.1, but I never bothered hooking up two
back channel surround spearkers...(so it just runs 5.1 sound) I'll defiintely
get those 2 extra speakers hooked up before Golden Compass comes out!

What titles are you referring to specifically? There are a VERY limited amount of titles with both.

Very likely because they're simply louder. Human perception perceives "louder" as clearer

Either that or DTS is cooking their mixes again

Except that all things being equal, none of that matters when comparing to an LPCM track of an identical sample rate/bit depth. Both are lossless

I didn't realize there were any BDs with both a LPCM and a DTS-MA audio track(?). I remember Close Encounters has TrueHD & DTS-MA, but other than that....

I may be missing something, but if they are identical, why would they bother putting both out?

I never understood, either -- I have a disc with TrueHD and PCM on it, and wondered the same thing.

First, i thought maybe it was for those who didn't have HDMI and used optical, that way they could still get the DD 5.1 core imbedded in the TrueHD, but that didn't make sense either, since they could just put a DD 5.1 track on it.

Thanks Sonny, I don't even have that BD yet and was trying to go from memory (bad idea on my part). I just remembered it had two tracks to choose from, from a review I guess.

The poorly selling Close Encounters BD has DTS-HD MA (yes, Lossless) & TrueHD for English, and TrueHD only for French & Spanish. In this case, it's likely there because Spielberg was an initial investor of DTS. It's not like there was a disc space concern, so why not? (Sony doesn't generally use DTS.)

like it was stated before, Speilberg has ties to the origin of DTS, so all of his movie soundtracks have always received the "SPECIAL" treatment on the DTS tracks. Almost night and day. Just listen to "Jaws" on both and you will clearly hear a difference.

I believe it's a miss-print on the cover. When I play the disc on my system the panel lights show "DTS HD MA"
