Default March sales: Wii continues to dominate ..

"Sales of the Wii console hit 721,000 units in March compared to 432,000 units the month before.

For the Wii, that was more than the combined sales of the two rival consoles - - the Xbox 360 from Microsoft (MSFT) and the PlayStation 3 from Sony Corp. (SNE)

During March, the Xbox 360 moved 262,000 units - up 3% from the prior month. The PS3's sales fell slightly to 257,000 units from 280,800 units the month before, according to NPD data."

It's a cheap, fun console, goes for a slightly different demographic than your 360 and PS3 crowd (although a lot of the 2 crowds probably have a Wii as well). It's by far one of my favorite consoles and I like all 3.

It's easy... Just take the Gamecube graphics and gameplay, add motion sensing, and you can sell a ton of systems (but not a lot of games)!

While it's true that the Wii sells more systems than any other console, they also have the lowest attach rate of the three. A lot of families just get the system and play Wii Sports or maybe one of the Mario games.

...Which is not to say that the Wii isn't a huge success, because it is.

What I find strange, is that the 360 is now offically cheaper than the Wii, will more people start to complain about the 360's problems, if you catch my drift? But for some reason, I want to have a Wii to go with my PS3. Am I going crazy?

Yeah is pretty fun. I have the wii sports and the wii play. I own super smash bros melee and will own mario kart. That is all i can see myself buying for this system. As for the ps3, i didn't even want to buy games for it and simply use it as a blu-ray player. Now i 4 games and my 5th is in the mail(GT5 Prologue). There will be plenty more games i will want to buy for it i'm sure.

I only have a Wii and a DS. I'm completely hooked on Nintendo and gaming. I'll be getting a PS3 this weekend though.

If I remember properly I have :

Wii Sports
Link's Crossbow Training
Super Paper Mario
Super Mario Galaxy
Metroid Prime 3
Sonic (Sucks)
Rayman Raving Rabbids
Okami (Awesome)
Super Smash Brothers
Elebits
Legend of Zelda : Twilight Princess

That's a decent console to game ratio.. If I'm remembering everyhing.

People have argued from the beginning about whether the Wii actually competes with the 360 and PS3 or not. I guess if it doesn't, there might be a lot of people who own BOTH a Wii and EITHER a PS3 or 360.

Whereas there should be very few who own both a PS3 and a 360.

I wonder if there is data on something like that ..?

Why did people buy Cabbage patch kids and Furbys?

That's how they do it. Keep it scarce and a status symbol for as long as possible. And it's a "cheap" "new" system with a gimmick

Just do a search on here for "Wii" and "gathering dust", and you'll see what most Wiis not sold to existing Nintendo customers and families with children are doing

I like that when the ps3 does well the npd thread goes in the ps3 section, when it performs poorly-to the off topic.

I always hear of someone buying all of them in stock, presumably to sell online at a $100 (or more) premium. It's your typical 'must have christmas toy' that gets cleaned out by scalpers and sold with a rediculous premium.

The difference is with the wii, the demand didn't end with the holdiay season. People are STILL trying to get them with the same determination.

That's exactly right. It's all about value.... the more rare something is, the more value it inherently has. Think gold, diamonds, Red Sox jersey dug up from the new Yankees stadium.... people want it more because it's hard to get. The PS2 had this factor as well when it was initially released.

Also, given it's so rare, people keep talking about it. Older people like it because it's simpler. Young kids like it because they really think they're swinging that golf club. Hardcore gamers DON'T like it because the graphics are cheesy, and the gameplay is too simple.

The wii has a better attach rate last I saw, and it is only improved after this month, which is remarkable considering the unit sales.

Regardless, at this point in the consoles' lifespans, attach rate is not nearly as significant as total software sales.

Or perhaps it's in the off-topic section because every post has been about the Wii, not the PS3?

On another note, I'm curious if I'm the only one who is sick and tired of Mario and his family of characters? I think 90% of the reason why I avoid nintendo products like the plague these days is because half their games cast the same 20-year old characters. Look, I liked super mario bros., back when I had an NES. Super Mario World was cool on the SNES too.... but it's gotten out of control. Mario does not need to play the lead role in every frigging game!

My point more than illustrated here: http://gaming.wikia.com/wiki/List_of_Mario_Appearances

That's not really accurate, the first post included the ps3 and several others did as well. Typically there would be one npd thread around here and it would be in the ps3 section of the forum, this time...not.

Mario is the Vincent Price of gaming. He'll lend his image to anyone, anywhere, and for any reason. "No payment, no matter how small, is one I will never refuse to take" is essentially his motto.
