Blu-ray fans, I have heard DVI is 1080p and or1080i. Can some one tell me which one is it?
I'm currently working on upgrading my computer. I really need to know this before I start buying a new monitor and Blu-ray drive. Thanks I currently have: AMD 64 3700+ (about to overclock) MSI K8N Neo4 939 Socket NVIDIA GeForce 8600 GT(HDCP READY) 2GB OCZ Memory 1TB harddrive (1x500gb internal and 1x500gb external) |

DVI is virtually identical to HDMI, other than its shape and look; DVI looks similar to a VGA. Whereas HDMI looks more like a giant USB. It serves the same purpose on the video side of things; it supports HDCP as well as 1080p but it does not support audio.
In fact, DVI supports resolutions up to 2600x1920, significantly higher than 1920x1080 (aka 1080p) and naturally HDMI supports 2600x1920 too. But other than for personal computing use, HDMI is rarely used for 2600x1920 resolution. No Blu-ray movie to this day supports a resolution higher than 1920x1080p, at least to my knowledge, as it is pointless considering that very few (if any) televisions / projectors that support resolutions higher than the full high definition standard (1080p). Hope this helped! ![]() |

as far as I know, dvi supports both 1080p and 1080i. i think hdmi became the standard before they started making 1080p tv's.

Indeed, the sets that were on the market before HDMI were usually the half resolution panels 1280 x 720 & 1366 x 768 or similar. I'm not aware of any panel being 1080P without HDMI (at least in the UK).

NOT TRUE.
I have a Westinghouse 1080p LCD monitor that only has DVI inputs. IT ABSOLUTELY DOES accept and display 1080p signals. Think of it this way: DVI is the same thing as HDMI, but with a fatter connector and no sound. To expand further, there are three types of DVI: DVI-D(igital), DVD-A(nalog), and DVD-I(ntegrated). You want DVI-D or DVI-I, which handles both. Because 1080p is only 1920x1080, you don't even need a dual link DVI--single-link goes supports up to 1920x1200. The key is to make sure that the DVI display device you are using is HDCP compliant, which virtually all of them made withing the past couple of years are. Just remember DVI is ABSOLUTELY CAPABLE OF 1080p. I am proof of that. |

My monitor (Westinghouse LVM-37W1) accepts native 1080p signals through its DVI 1 input (DVI 2 input is limited to 1080i for some reason) and displays the native 1920x1080 signal progressively, with NO downconversion to 1080i or 720p. |

As indicated previously DVI can do 1080/60p with HDCP but without audio. It is direct electrical conversion. DVI has much more robust and large connector in comparison to small HDMI connector. I use DVI from my PC to upscale DVDs to 1080P.

Please people, check your facts before posting answers like this
I use DVI to HDMI and its 1080p, i promise Now DVI to DVI depends on the resolutions the monitor can display... if the monitor has a higher than max 1920x1080i resolution, then yes it will display 1080p for you DVI does NOT transfer audio, so my dvi to hdmi requires me to route the audio to my reciever seperately |
